Can I get a marriage license without a SSN? I keep hearing that it's needed, so we've been stuck on that because of the screw-ups there. I'm expecting my SSN next week and then we can hopefully apply for the license.

Depends on the state you are marrying in, just google "marriage license (state you plan to marry in) requirements" and you'll find out easily. It's not necessary to marry in the state you live in, often people don't.

my fiancee went to the SSA office today and the guy told her that upon her arrival to the US a Social Security Number was created for her... does that sound right?

HellowWorld: That's how it works for K-3's and other married before they get here cases (the PoE does it I believe when they kick out the green card and everything else). If they really did create a SSN for her at the PoE you can request it from SS... but it sounds like a mistake was made, maybe they got the wrong A# or name from y our wife or something... but either way, you need to find out for sure what's going on.

ETA: She went alone? How good is her english... my wife speaks very good english but at the same time, she often doesn't understand something and rarely asks someone for an explaination, so sometimes when I ask her about something her explaination doesn't make sense completely... maybe your wife didn't explain things the way SSA expects and they thought she had married before coming to the US?

she went with my sister and from what they told me, the SSA officer had a list and my fiancee gave him her passport so that he can look up her name in his list, and i guess her name was on that list... he said to wait until next week and if nothing shows up in the mail to go back to the SSA office and request a new Social Security Number/Card..

We got the licence without my husband's SS, I called first and they told me he needed his passport and I wrote letter saying he lived with me, they notarized it in a different department and that was it!. I think if your husband explains the situation maybe they will let you get the licence without the SS.

Good luck!

I just applied for a marriage license in Nebraska for Ian and I. I sent it in by mail with a copy of my driver's license and a copy of Ian's passport (photo page). They had a spot for the social security number on the application, but I typed "none". The site says they require one, but apparently, only if one exists.

The marriage license in Nebraska requires us to appear before a notary public before getting married, provide ID (driver's license or passport.. whichever you happen to have) and have them stamp the document with their notary seal. Then we can get married, and have the officiant and witnesses sign it, then send it into the county for recording.

So, if you come to Nebraska, at least (or call your county's marriage license bureau to ask), it's possible to get married without a SSN.

Well....lost my income (it was nice) but my venue for sales closed completely. I guess it's back to working in the hospital (which I hate...sales paid better and kept me at home on the couch petting the puppies). VERY depressing because I had family back in Thailand employed making stuff for me to sell.

So...I'll give it another go to try a different product and different venue but I think I'll have to work for a boss again. I'm worried about my income reporting and if she can stay, etc. It happened just in time to get my bank statements for the interview in a couple weeks. Our interview is on the 23rd or 22nd (I forgot) but 5 days I'll be flying over there to hang out for a month.

I'm bringing my suit to meet with some execs at a shoe factory (ask about copyright, what names/photos I'm allowed to use, etc). Daunting but I need to give it one more umph before resigning to having a boss again.

Marriage....I'll learn about marriage and SS cards name changes in detail I guess when I get back, do blood tests for marriage license.

It's scary not to have any income just before scheduling a month abroad then having to come back and smarten up really fast. This economy is a bite in the crotch by a doberman! I think we're all gonna die, really! Surely we're all gonna die! LOL!

I'm thinking of buying gold and selling it but the profit isn't as big....gotta think think think....what can I sell from Thailand that's in demand here. I think the shoes will go over well since this brand has never seen the US before and their stuff is superior to the big names....just marketing and branding with what I have in the bank....pray pray!

I'm hoping the interview will go well and we'll be all done, close her apartment, go hang out wiht family in the barn (their house..no windows, a hose for running water)...but hey, that's my (new) peeps! I love em!

I'd sell arms and drugs if I could figure out how they do it (kidding)! Take care everyone. I'll peek here once in a while and I'll definitely log in after our interview.

You don't require an SSN to marry in IL. At least not in DuPage County, IL, where I reside. Bloomington, IL comes under McClean County's jurisdiction, and according to the guidelines provided by the McClean County's Clerk: http://www.mcleancountyil.gov/CountyClerk/...ge_Brochure.pdf You only need your Social Security #s, IF APPLICABLE. And McClean County required you to make an appointment to get your marriage license, so just give them a call and inform them that one of you is a K-1 visa holder and they should waive the SS# requirement for you.

Visa Journey completed, but we are still here to provide support! :)
