I always thought 'uppity' meant 'snobby'.

Liefde is een bloem zo teer dat hij knakt bij de minste aanraking en zo sterk dat niets zijn groei in de weg staat

IK HOU VAN JOU, MARK

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

Hello all,

I wanted to get peoples opinion on something. I own a redbone coonhound. I was told by a cousin that ####### was racist term. I thought huh, what?, so I googled it. I really didnt find much on it that would imply that it was a racial term. In my searches I came across this a article where a Republican used the word uppity when referring to Obama. Once again I was surprised that that could have some racist reference to it.

I think its rather riduclous that one would get offended if coondhound was mentioned when talking about there dog or something similar, same with "uppity" when in the context of what has meant to me. People are just too sensitive these days.

I was wondering what those words mean to people here and maybe give me some history on it

thanks

Since I'm a Yankee,I thought ####### was the diminutive for racoon.

I always believed uppity (in the UK) means someone who is a bit highly strung and stresses out to much about something. Similar to uptight.

i think uppity is racist when accompanied by the 'n' word. as in 'uppity n*&^%.'

Correct, the suggestion being that the person in question is trying to rise about their station in life when they have no right to simply because they are the 'wrong' colour and therefore inferior. I think it's about time there was some proper education in what is and isn't a racial term and WHY. Uppity on its own has no particularly threatening meaning.

It is, let's not perpetuate any more nonsense and understand better what constitutes racism. That is a sustained attempt to belittle certain people because they are believed to be a lesser species of human and the words that have been and still are associated with that belief.

That said...there is still a huge double standard when it comes to racist terms used to describe whites and those used to describe "others". Whitey, redneck, gringo, etc. are used frequently with abandon here on VJ without any repercussions or criticism. It just flies under the PC radar undisturbed. Try that little stunt with the slang terms for the "others" and see what happens. What's up with that?

I find it even more disgusting when I see liberal whites that use racially insensitive terms about fellow whites as if it is so witty and hip. It's not. It's pathetic.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

As for the OP, it never occured to me to think of "#######" or "uppity" as racial epithets. I think some people look for an excuse to be offended when no offense is intended.

Those things are just cheap pot shots, name calling, whatever, it's not racism because, and here is the crucial part, there has never been any attempt to suggest that those of white skin are an inferior race and these words are never associated with a systematic attempt to belittle and demean white people in order to subjugate them.

Seems to me like some people really don't understand what racism actually is.

Like explaining that biological parity does not equal social parity. Its pointless with some of the more backwards sectors of society.

Doesn't make them all A$$HOLES, unless of course, they try to be.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.
