"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt

Nothing here indicates that "no effort was made to find the alleged rapists". My understanding of the law here in Saudi is that if they (the rapists) are identified and caught, the consequences for them are worse. Unfortunately as both parties get punished the victim (as was in this case) attempts to hide the crime, time passes, and there is nothing the legal system can do. The law here is not secret. Single women and men are NOT allowed to be alone together in public. They check couples all the time for proof of marriage at the mall, market, etc and it's a bad thing (even for a USC) to be found with an unmarried member of the opposite sex. Crime of any type here is rare indeed. As draconian as the laws may sound, it appears to me that on an outcome basis they appear to be effective.

Laws that rely on the subjugation of an entire gender (or race, or faith, etc... ) in order to be "effective" are nothing to be proud of.

I have absolutely no doubt that, if caught, these offenders would testify on behalf of one another and go unpunished.

Stories like this just turn my stomach.

:crying:

Many thanks to the Visajourney community for all the help!

There seems to be a couple of details missing from this story:

1. Why was she out in public if she's only allowed to do so alongside male family members?

2. Why did she get into get into a strange man's car? That'd break the law in that country and might be an incredibly dangerous thing to do (which turned out it was).

I'd like to know why those details haven't been reported. Were those friends who grabbed her? Maybe members of her extended family? Why would she get into the car if were neither? It's foolish to do so in the U.S., which has far more lenient laws and gives women rights.

I'd like to state that I do not, in any way, think sentencing this women to prison and lashing her is right nor does it solve anything. They're merely hurting the victim while the perpetrators go free. I can't understand why any judge would allow this.

I know I'm from an entirely different society, but temporarily removing the moral aspect, having these laws seem counterproductive. If nothing else, men would need to spend an inordinate amount of time watching over and/or driving the women. I'd have to imagine that'd lower overall productivity and therefore, hurt the country itself.

Adultery- sex with someone with whom you are NOT married.

I live in a place where it's legal to take a ride from a stranger of the opposite sex and I STILL wouldn't dare to do it, so what does that tell us about this woman who was raised in this super ultra conservative culture? Quite a careless rebel? Sure no one deserves to be raped, but she must be deviant. I'm sure she'll survive.

Saudi judge sentences pregnant gang-rape victim to 100 lashes for committing adultery

Liz Hazelton

2009/02/11 11:01

A Saudi judge has ordered a woman should be jailed for a year and receive 100 lashes after she was gang-raped, it was claimed last night.

The 23-year-old woman, who became pregnant after her ordeal, was reportedly assaulted after accepting a lift from a man.

He took her to a house to the east of the city of Jeddah where she was attacked by him and four of his friends throughout the night.

She later discovered she was pregnant and made a desperate attempt to get an abortion at the King Fahd Hospital for Armed Forces.

According to the Saudi Gazette, she eventually 'confessed' to having 'forced intercourse' with her attackers and was brought before a judge at the District Court in Jeddah.

He ruled she had committed adultery - despite not even being married - and handed down a year's prison sentence, which she will serve in a prison just outside the city.

She is still pregnant and will be flogged once she has had the child.

The Saudi Arabian legal system practices a strict form of medieval law. Women have very few rights and are not even allowed to drive.

They are also banned from going out in public in the company of men other than male relatives

Once spent 5 days in Saudi Arabia, was the worst 5 months of my life.

OMG,and one of my goofy cousins just went there to teach English.

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!
