Cake topper that symbolizes the distance

Me and my fiance are in the final stages of the fiance visa and so we will be doing a civil ceremony soon with a bigger wedding in 2010. We will be getting a small cake for the first wedding and so I want this cake topper to symbolize the 'distance'.

I was thinking something along the lines of us standing by a globe/world or with a airplane....any ideas? has anyone else thought of doing something like this??

I have seen custom websites...but I am not going to spend $160-$350 for a wedding topper.

Anyone have any ideas? websites? something??

that's tough. i, too, want a different kind of topper. before my SO and i reunited last year, i would wish on a star for true love every night and it came true. so my wedding theme and topper will be a gold star. haven't found the right one yet, but my mom is a cake designer, so she suggested looking at jewelry. i found some beautiful brooches that could be transformed into a topper. my suggestion---look for ideas elsewhere since you want a unique item. good luck!

We found a new approach that will make this a lot cheaper.....

I found on ebay a mini replica of the American Airlines plane that we both take to see each other and I found a bunch of key chains that are 'globes'....so I am just going to detach some parts of each little thing and set it with a statue of a couple....maybe get a piece of wire and attach the plane to it and put it behind us and put the globe somewhere else....

excuse me, suggested....its a couple both on their cell phones. now i did not find that the least bit funny or a cute idea either...i found it pretty stupid actually. the couple looks like they arent on the phone with each other...but are busy....and too busy to give each other attention. just my opinion though.

I should dismantle my webcam when he moves back here and put it on the cake tho, lol. i never want to use it again....i like the face to face conversations WAYY better

Hmm. We gave up on the search for a wedding topper because they were either cheesy plastic ####### or cheesy plastic ####### that was too heavy or big for our relatively small cake. So we had the bakery decorate the top of the cake with flowers, and they did an amazing job -- it looked like a bouquet and there were flowers made to look like lilies, daisies, and roses. $20.

So I would suggest talking to the bakery where you are having your cake made (or any bakery if you're not) and seeing if they can construct something for your out of various icings, if your homemade topper (which sounds great) isn't to your liking.
