What are current K1 filers thinking, talking and planning for regarding dates of marriage after entry. For members who have "been there / done that" what would you do differently and why?

Sorry but I had to put a N/A question in each poll due to technical or intellectual limitations..

my wife and I got married 13 days after she arrived but we didnt file AOS until 2 months after that...

We would have filed earlier but we were busy and it turned out with an RFE she didnt get her EAD until 4 months after her AOS was sent

I'm sure there are almost as many correct answers to this question as there are filers. Some couples might very well benefit from waiting almost the full 90 days, while others might want to get the AOS started as soon as possible. I don't think there is a right answer for everybody.

We plan on getting married very quitley as soon as I get there so that I can file my aos. Then I will have plenty of time to organise a party while waiting for my EAD, however knowing us, we probably wont get round to it hahahaha

"Wait 70+ days to make sure"

I guess your poll has to do with making sure one should really marry the person you brought over.

I've always thought that question should be resolved BEFORE you go to all the bother and before the person you brought over gave up everything to come here, but oh well.................

If both parties have agreed to wait and make sure FIRST, then the deadline should have been negotiated between the two of them.

If they both did not talk about this kind of arrangement, well then I feel sorry for the uninformed party.

At first, I thought it would be about 2 months after entry, but I'm planning...( and praying like crazy) that I'll be allowed to pass the border for the month of April. During that time, we are going to make some major decisions. Tim needs a little work in his house, so we can do that, and my wedding dress made. We're going to decide on a list of places for a reception and photographers. Then, when we know the actual date, he can start calling them and whoever is available, we book them! We'll choose flowers, and decide how to decorate the church and hall, and pick out teams to help us. Basically, we want to know what we want during that month, and then...when we have the date, we can lock in everything. It's going to be a busy month!

When the interview finally takes place, ( and Tim is coming up here for that ) POE hopefully will be within a week, or less of that, and the actual wedding to take place within 2 or 3 weeks of arriving. Very tricky planning a wedding from 2500 miles away when you are the bride!!

We're getting married at the judge's 6 days after his arrival so we can apply for AOS immediately. We're then going to throw a big reception in America (scheduled for December 2009) and a big reception in England (depends on AP).

We got married 6 weeks after my husband arrived. We didn't have a date set because we were going to go to the courthouse - I was thinking maybe we'd take a trip to Miami and do it there.

My husband wanted to focus on the interview and his moving here before planning for the wedding...hahaha. It seems crazy now but it worked out ok since neither one of us was thinking about a formal wedding. 90 days is not enough to prepare if you don't start before the move.

I let my best friends talk me into an intimate wedding with family and friends and it was PERFECT. When my husband got here he decided he wanted to marry on his birthday - which was 6 weeks after his arrival. Everything worked out find. We IMMEDIATELY applied for AOS and the EAD since he wanted to work as soon as possible. It was also easier for him to get his DL which he wanted to.

Ok I think I answered wrong but I am leaving on 18th sow just over a week away and we are getting married on 9th of april ( because it's a school holiday in England and I want my family there.

We are having a wedding with most of the trimmings so my dad can walk me down the isle. And it's what we always wanted.

I wouldn't have done much differently other that not using a specific photocopier to photocopy my passport. And been more organized before now on wedding stuff that we could have done.

Thanks for the feedback.

It seems like many of the people are planning for a simple ceremony (at least initially) financial or AOS reasons. I voted in the "have not decided yet" category as we still have 6 months to go. We both want something small and simple so its more about where we will get married not how big it will be.

We will get married later into the 90 day period, probably around day 60. Just a simple justice of the peace affair to make it legal. I don't need the wedding at all, would have been just as happy to 'live in sin' perpetually but for K-1 requirements. She wanted the big family shindig, but we already did that for her in Bangkok last fall.

My reasoning for delay is unfortunately very unromantic. I was married before, had a very bitter divorce, and have sworn to myself that I will protect myself from the emotional and financial pain of ever going through that again, as best as I can. Thus, we have a prenup to protect my financial assets. And we will use the 60 day period to help her acclimate, insofar as possible, to life in America. I don't foresee any problems, I have every reason to believe that we are destined for a happy life together and I am counting the days till her arrival. But I am using the 60 days as a sort of "return" policy that if sh really goes into culture shock here, at least we have some wiggle room before being married. I feel a bit ashamed to lay it out so bluntly, but I guess once bitten, twice shy. We have of course discussed this all in detail, so none of this is kept from her. She's sweet enough and understanding enough that she's willing to deal with my insecurity in this matter. That makes me love her all the more, and feel all the more certain that she is indeed the one for me.
