Jona pooped into the potty last night! Yeah! Whenever he pushes, we can tell cause he sounds like an old man.... We introduced the baby Bjoern potty last week and he played with it and thinks it is fun to sit on it. Oh well and last night we put him on and it worked.... Yeah!!! I mean he will understand the association eventually, but not too soon I guess.... It is a game for him :)

Hm we have the PacknPlay for special situation, a la when we put furniture together or moved in with all those movers everywhere. Otherwise, no way. He hates it. Instead, we babyproofed the kitchen/dining room/ family room (open room concept house) and he can roam free here without getting hurt or destroy anything. We left one cabinet un-baby-proofed in the kitchen and put toys in there. He loves to empty it out and we can cook/clean without him getting upset.

I don't know if I mentioned it, but he says mama and follows me around... I guess we entered the clingy phase. But this morning he woke up right next to me, smiled and laughed and said mama. Sooooooooo cute!

I certainly wanted to be sure my granddaughter was safe and her baby seat was secure, found on the web that 63% of the people don't know this with the new fangled safety belts we have today. So you have to buy a safety clip, found a Mighty Tite at Target for 18 bucks that has a ratchet affair to make tensioning a lot easier than those stupid E type clips where you have to play with the belt length to get it just right.

It's like the people that make cars and baby seats are from two different worlds. I did learn what those clips were for on my package tray, that is that flat panel under the rear window that collects dust, not suppose to put packages there, for a front facing baby seat with a tether for an additional safety clip, if your kid is old enough, they have a regulation on that as well.

Everything is so complicated today, not in my baby era where it was legal to toss your kids in the back of a pickup truck and take off. Son told me when he first took MY granddaughter home, they wouldn't let him leave the hospital until he learned how to use a baby seat, I wasn't there for that.

Did you know that just as many kids were killed riding in the front seat by airbags as stupid adults that lives were saved by not using safety belts! So our brilliant law makers are forcing you to put your kids in the back seat because of that rather than letting those stupid adults die. Each life saved by stupid adults not wearing safety belts is costing us 25 million bucks, what a poor investment.

But you have to follow the law, can get tossed in prison if a kid get hurt or killed riding in the front seat. My youngest daughter was locked up in a baby sit, when I was teaching her how to drive, the instant she got behind the wheel, she fell asleep, was trained to do that, guess they never thought about that either.

Envy the Amish that live around here, with a horse drawn carriage, they can hold their babies. And very little thought was given to quickly get your baby out of that seat in case of an accident, but lawmakers are avoiding that issue where babies were burnt alive. Not easy living in a country ran by idiots.

NIck, carseats are really complicated these days... We keep ours in the back rear facing til our son weighs 35 pounds, which is the cut off for rear facing. It is way safer than forward facing. I came across the info recently... The chances of dieing in a car crash are 500% higher if the toddler is forward facing. DH wanted to switch at one year, but now we are waiting.

That same son was rear ended by a drunk driving at 30 mph when he was stopped at a crosswalk with lots of pedestrians walking, was a couple of years ago before Amber was born. Good thing he was driving a gas guzzling large SUV and the guy that hit him was driving an Escort, or maybe people would have been killed. Also a good thing Amber wasn't born yet. Statistics are based on the most common form of accident, like driving into a large oak tree, unfortunately we live in a beautiful state, but you can't buy a bottle of wine at a store after 9:00 PM, but every corner bar is opened until 2:00 AM with no way to get there besides using a car. Our government is loaded with idiots.

Three of my kids are driving mini-vans because of baby seat rules, another disaster, a big box on a compact car chassis with wide sliding doors impossible to open if hit on the side by some drunk. Practically all cars made today have the fuel tank located under the rear seat. While there is security in having a full tank of gas when driving to nowhere, better off only having a couple of gallons if rear ended. Cars also have three gallons of highly combustible automatic transmission fluid, and another couple of gallons of motor oil, not too much power steering and brake fluid, but also combustible. A sister-in-law was burned alive with what may call a fender bender, no way to get out, but all the emphasis is placed on locking you in. When this happens to your family, causes you to think.

@ Twila and Anna, hooray for first words and pooping in the potty! :)

@ Caro, thinking of you! You're in the home stretch!

Rayan had his two-week well-baby visit today, and it went very well. He has regained all the weight he lost right after birth, plus 7 ounces, so he is now 9 pounds 11 ounces. Big boy! They also measured his length at 22 inches, and he was 19 inches long at birth -- doubt he grew 3 inches in 16 days, so I guess he's straightening out more. He didn't cry at all until the nurse gave him his hep B shot, and then he just yelled for a couple of seconds and calmed down. The nurse got out of there so fast! :-)

The only concern is that the doctor felt both hip joints click when she flexed them. She said this is very common in babies who have been breech for a significant period, which Rayan was for a while, though he had turned a few weeks before delivery. She will schedule him an appointment for an ultrasound of the joints to see if he needs treatment, and if he does, it will be a matter of putting a harness of some sort on him for a while. She said it's very treatable when caught early, and we certainly want him to be able to kick that soccer ball.

Carol Anne - You might be surprised how fast they grow in length. My two were going every week during the first month for weight checks and "failure to thrive". They were growing an inch a week (and sometimes more). My two have now grown at least 11 inches in 7 months! I know the medical assistant was always measuring correctly because I was helping her stretch the babies out!

Nessa, I hope little Ben feels better soon.

Twila, an inch a week! Wow! I guess he could be going through a growth spurt. He can sometimes go for four hours without nursing, but then he makes up for lost time. Tonight he nursed (well, nursed and dozed a little) for maybe 45 minutes. Then I changed him, and he started fussing and rooting as I was carrying him back to the front room, so he nursed and dozed (mostly active nursing) for another half hour or so. This may have been mostly a comfort thing after I subjected him to a checkup and a supermarket visit today. But he has taken 4 ounces of expressed milk at one time from a bottle on several occasions, so he apparently has room for it.

I don't remember if I said we've been using cloth diapers at home for a little over a week now, and it's working out so well. Before he was born, I ordered 12 Chinese prefolds and 12 Indian prefolds, all unbleached, and three Prorap covers at the recommendation of someone here. I ordered a couple AIOs also, but I haven't even tried them yet. We haven't had any leaks at all, just a little mess on an inside leg hole of the cover from time to time, and washing them has been very easy. He fusses a little more when I'm putting the cloth on him than he does with the disposables, but as soon as he's dressed, he's happy again, and it now takes about the same amount of time to change cloth as it does to change disposables. Very happy with this choice.

@caybee: we put 2 diapers on a baby with hip dysplasia. The legs are spread further resulting in a physiologic position of the hips/joints.

Good to hear everything is great with Rayan!

@carseats: unfortunately they are no real laws, only suggestions and a lot of people turn the seat around prior to one year out of convenience.

We decided to leave Ben rear facing as long as possible, so far he doesn't mind even though there is less and less legroom for him as he grows bigger, he just folds up his legs indian style.

With the economy the way it is today, rarely get to see all my grandkids as they live far away. My six year old grandson sat me down and gave me the 3rd degree to make sure I was his grandpa, when convinced, he gave me a great big hug. A seven year old granddaughter was born with one leg shorter than the other. Missed out on all the surgeries she went through, poor thing, but now she is taking ballet lessons. With my wife working as a medical interpreter, sees some drastic things with newborns, be thankful your baby is well. No greater joy than having babies, this is really the only thing you are leaving behind.

Perhaps unfair to the other grandchildren, Amber lives close, so we tend to look at baby things and buy them for her, we have baby toys laying around for her to play with that stay here and our making our home, baby proof. Looking forward to this weekend when she will be here again. Wife sings to here in Spanish, she likes that. I was feeding her, she decided to feed me as well, nothing more precious than a baby.
