Hey all..

I was wondering if anyone has had to do this..

I'm currently an International student. My fiance and I just got engaged in December

We're planning to have our wedding next year and then go for our honeymoon in Portugal. (we're planning on using the time between now and then to learn portuguese.. rosetta stone!!!)

Ideally I'd like to have one of those wedding receptions where we leave our guests after the reception in our getaway vehicle (with the just married cans tied to the back) and drive directly to the airport!!!

Obviously my non-citizenship presents a problem with this ideal picture :(

Would you guys recommend getting married at a town hall ahead of time and doing all that necessary paperwork so that by the time we have our big hurrah we'll be all set to enjoy our honeymoon?

If so, about how long would you say we should allow for it? Feel free to throw in some extra weeks in your estimates she we have plenty of time.

Also will there be problems with having a church ceremony. I have no idea if churches allow people who have been legally married to each other to have a religious ceremony. But his mom really wants us to get married in a catholic church, so... if anyone out there has EVER had this issue, let me know!

Thanks!!!

Sounds romatic BUT if you plan on adjusting status after you marry you can't leave and return to the US until you have your GC!

Yep, just keep that in mind when you make your plans. I wouldn't leave without that green card or you'll end up separated for a good long time after the honeymoon.

Yeah.... I know this all too well from reading other posts. Which is why I'm wondering if it's worth it to just go to city hall and get married and file for the AOS and wait for the GC. Then after I get the GC we can plan the big reception and honeymoon.

Only thing is I have no idea how long that process is from filing to receiving the GC in the mail.

Any ideas approx. how long that will take?

you can leave the country if you have an approved advance parole, which is part of the aos process. i think nessa's took about 2 months from application until approved and in hand.

With regards to the religious ceremony piece, in the Catholic Church it is called a "Validation of the Marriage" (not "Marriage Vows" because that was already done) ceremony. Our Catholic priest was willing to do it for us if for immigration purposes we had done the Civil Ceremony first. Check with your local priests and see if they would also be willing.

Good luck with your journey.
