We need to do some finance rearranging. We are spending way too much money on our phone/internet bills. We can't really cancel our house phone because our cell's don't come in good enough at home. I was thinking about getting Vonage or something but in order to get that you have to have an internet connection, which works through our current phone. I was wondering if there was some internet provider I could get that is cheaper than my current phone/internet bill that would still allow us to have a phone in the house, but cheaper. We are spending about $250 a month on these bills combined, which to some may not seem to outrageous, but we think it is. Just wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what we could do to eliminate some expenses.

Wow that's a TON.

We don't have phone service bc of our cells but we pay $50 a month for BRoadband Cable internet through Comcast.

That might be cheaper since we have cable with them too but I dunno.

Yeah, I left that part out. We can't get cable at our house. They won't run the lines out there. We have Dish Network. They offer internet around $45 a month, which is a cheaper than what we are paying now. But, we would still need a phone provider.

We cancelled our home phone cuz we never really use it, we get more spam calls. We kept our cellphones which we use a lot. We have cable internet. Since we are not using dial up DSL, there is really need no need for a landline. My suggestion is if your cell provider does not have good coverage in your area, you can switch to a better carrier and move your # to them. DH moved his # from Sprint to Cingular, the latter has better coverage in our area, we also signed up for their family talk plan.

We use SKYPE for international calls and for other local outgoing calls too - say if I want to call my bank, any 1-800#, any local US phones (calls are free to US and Canada until end of the year). We have Skype incoming calls forwarded to our cellphones (rate is $0.02/minute to forward calls), and we make sure we load our Skype w/ $10. Our total bill for internet/cellphone/Skype is about $130/monthly.

We use dish network and we have our internet and phone with verizon.... its about half what you are paying in total

Kezzie

So Verizon has internet. I did not know that. Maybe I could go that route. I would still need to do something about the home phone.

I guess I left out the biggest part of this equation. We live in the middle of no where and we have very limited options. The only cell phone provider here is Verizon and a small local company. We use BellSouth as our home phone/internet provider. I will check on the Verizon internet.

Now, we just need to find a new home phone provider.

Well, never mind on the Verizon internet, it's not offered here either. I hate living in the boonies! We have such limited choices for stuff. It's so darn irritating! :ranting:

well i dunno about your city, but up here, comcast has a deal going - cable, internet and phone for $99/mo. (for a 1 year contract). so you wouldn't need vonage or anything else.

that deal wasn't around when we signed up, so its about $125 for cable and internet plus another $25 for vonage. but it would be $20-$40 less if we'd picked a smaller cable package... but since i am here 24/7 till the EAD, i need my hbo & showtime. :D

Verizon provide my home phome not my cell phone.... $17.99 a month for phone/DSL

Kezzie

Okay, I'm checking on that. I didn't know they provided home phone service either. Jeez, I'm way out of the loop.

Okay, Verizon does not provide any services, other than cell phone, in my area. I guess we have no choice but to keep paying this ridiculous amount of money each month. Or we could move, but I'm thinking that may cause more expenses than what we are paying now. Well, unless anyone else has any other suggestions I guess we are stuck. Thanks everyone!

Do you think so, because this was the avenue I was going to take? I was going to get Dish network internet and Vonage for my home phone. It wouldn't solve the problem with the cell phone bill but it would be a little cheaper than the set up we have now for the phone/internet.

Put your info in here to find out if you can get DSL. It's based on how far you are from a central office (CO). Get DSL if you can then get something like vonage for long distance (or Skype).

Can you get DSL?

There will be some lag/latency/high ping with satellite.

Satellite internet and Vonage

Okay, Rich, I put in my info and this is what it said: YEP!, your CO is wired for DSL from one or more DSL networks. Unfortunately, no distance estimate was returned, so availability shown below may be limited if you live more than 12000 feet from the CO.

So, is this good or bad? I'm really not good with this sort of thing. Plus, I was going to say, with Dish network, you use Earthlink internet. Would that still have problems associated with it?

It should have listed companies that offer service in your area for DSL.

The whole satellite thing will create too much of a delay to use VOIP.
