I just got my EAD and hopefully my SSN soon. I would like to appeal for all those who have jobs right now to share the most effective way in looking for a job in this foreign land.

I can't wait to get a job and so far, I signed up in online job search engine like the careerbuilder.com. Is this effective at all? I feel that this is not enough to land a job in this thriving economy.

For US citizens, please share with us the tips the effective way of looking for a job here in this foreign country!!!

Thanks in advance!

Best advice I can give is to remeber the interview is yours too. Not only is the employer looking to see if you will fit the position, but you should look to make sure the position/place fits you as well. Ask questions!

Put good effort into your resume. It's the first thing the hiring managers see and it's all they have to judge you by (until they meet you at the interview of course). If possible ask someone in the same industry as you are trying to get into review & critique your resume for you

It would be helpful if you mentioned here the kind of work you would like to find. Perhaps there are those who can help you focus your search. Others have told me that posting on www.craigslist.com is effective, and it costs nothing. As you probably already know, a lot of "job openings" are posted only to comply with equal employment opportunity regulations, but someone has already been picked for the job. Temp agencies are also a good place to start, depending on what skills and training you already have. Temp agencies will place you as a temporary employee with one of their clients, take a percentage of your pay, and send you the rest. It is a good way to get in the front door for many companies.

For me at least..

  • I had my wife Americanize my CV/Resume as much as possible, printed it made into PDF's for emailing.. etc
  • Signed up to Monster, Career Builder and anything else related
  • Checked local papers, online and in print
  • Stalked City, County and State websites for jobs.. (sometimes good pay, good benefits and holidays!)
  • I aimed for jobs I really wanted, would happily do, would do, could do, would do if I had to and would do because I needed the money/benefits in that sort of order lol

Good luck and expect your first job to be shite, mine was most others was as well but you might get lucky!!

Update and reformat your resume according to US style. Translate positions culturally, not literally. Good luck!

Think of finding a job as your job.

Thanks!

I have my husband to do this for me.

I will remember that by the time I get an interview.. so far there is none or there was one. An employer called up for an interview but the job is for an insurance agent position and I suck in sales. I am best though in Customer Service. I will definitely ask questions.

Thanks for the pointer!!

Unfortunately, the friends that I have here are working in completely different field. I definitely love to get a job for a Customer Service Position. I was a Senior Account Representative in a call center. I love my work there , the people, the working environment especially my superiors. I'm just hoping that I can get a similar job here.

So, let me appeal to those who are in Customer Service field, I would really appreciate your opinion and advise!!

Thanks 'kaffy'!!!

Thanks Allen!!

I hope you can get your SSN soon.. Your lucky to have a job waiting for you. And don't lose hope. I always believe that everything happens for a reason so just be more patient.

And I hope there will be no problems with mine. The lady in the SSN office said that my name is the same still my maiden name but she still processed it and asked me to wait for 4 weeks. She advised me to go back and look for her if I don't receive it within the time frame.

Good Luck to both of us!

Thanks again!!

This is very informative. Thank you for that insight.

I would love to have Customer Service job. I worked for an online shopping site before and I love my job there. Prior to that, I was also a Collections Specialist for a mobile company for our US clients. I'm trying to land a job similar to those too.

I already saw those temp agencies online but I haven't sent my resume's yet.

So its also alright to drop off resume to company's here? I was just wondering if people here do that. That is also the way we look for a job back home. I will surely do that as soon as I can.

Thanks "Old Dominion'!
