Bush's idea of justice is bombs falling out of the sky?

by Johann on Thu Jun 08, 2006 at 04:49:28 AM PDT

That phrase, "delivered justice," sent a shiver up my spine.

What was delivered was retribution, not justice. This is plenty biblical, but not "just." Muslims, Christians, Jews -- all the followers of the cousin religions born in those lands -- have heard and ignored divine calls for restraint on revenge. That's what it means to say "[no more than] an eye for an eye."

Confusion between justice -- a dispassionate and methodical determination of guilt or innocence, and retribution -- simply revenge, but with the stench of summary justice, is a hallmark of the fundamentalist mentality.

al-Zarqawi was at war with the United States and Iraq. As such, he was a legitimate military target, provided the attack did not present an unreasonable risk of harm to non-combatants.

What we need to keep in mind, first, is that, while al-Zarqawi's death surely is a good thing, the contribution it may make to the development of a democratic Iraq at peace with itself is uncertain at best. Second, while people of good will all should join in hoping for the success of this project, success in no way would legitimate either the invasion of Iraq or the prior conduct of U.S. policy.

We have been lied to so many times by this illegitimate administration that the news of Al Zaqarwi's death as a faint whiff to it. It is like the boy who cried wolf once too often. Of course, the Repugs will orgasm over this and dear old George will go into deep ecstasy. Now we are rid of one murderous tyrant-how about the removal of another one-believed hiding in a safe-house at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue?

The reality is that other than from a PR standpoint Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's death means very little. As far as the tactical situation in Iraq is concerned, it means next to nothing other than freeing up some military resources which were otherwise occupied.

In fact al-Zarqawi had been on his way out with Al Qaeda for some time, being viewed as an obstacle by a number of forces in Iraq including Al Qaeda. It's likely that rival Al Qaeda members disclose his position to coalition forces

Even some of the righties in the know, who predicted his death yesterday, could see that his time had passed.

Perhaps if they had killed him three years ago, it might have had some meaningful effect. But under the current circumstances, it's little more than good PR for the Bush White House, since every news media provider in the US will be playing up the importance of this event.

But man does the media not live in reality. As if killing one man is going to slow down an insurgency much. Capturing Saddam sure did /snark.

What? You don't think this will change things? You're anti-soldier and unamerican! Bleach.

Zarqawi was beyond a problem for the emerging Iraqi government, as it was his belief in sectarian civil war that may have encouraged such things as attacks on municipal garbage collectors, the better to create a broken social system.

I am inclined to think that should be his epitaph - "he was such a cowardly dog that his idea of jihad was to plant explosives to assassinate innocent garbage men"

Perhaps the city dump would be an appropriate burial spot for him, so that every additional load of garbage was an additional insult to him. Who says that our two cultures cannot learn from each other?

The most damning thing about Zarqawi was that he was a Jordanian, who believed he had the duty to come to Iraq to stir up sectarian hatred and violence as a means of crippling the development of civil society. It would be marvelous if the end of this one divisive individual's life gave Iraq the opportunity to shake off his ideology. That is probably too much to hope for.

I'd enjoy pissing on his grave. Unfortunately, I don';t think this will do anything to stop the insurgency or civil war in Iraq. If anything, it might make things worse because a guy who actually knows how to handle an automatic weapon might take over that portion of the insurgency that was run by this #######.

Why would Dems be disappointed? The ####### is dead. He is believed to have killed Nicholas Berg in cold blood in a cowardly and brutal fashion - among many other heinous crimes he either committed, masterminded or directed. Many people died because of this sick **! He clearly got what he deserved. That's good news - no matter what side of the aisle one sits on.

He is believed to have killed Nicholas Berg in cold blood in a cowardly and brutal fashion...

Nicholas Berg's father, "a pacifist who is running for Delaware's U.S. House seat on the Green Party ticket", had this to say on hearing the news:

"First of all, I'm not even certain that al-Zarqawi even killed my son," said Michael Berg, who doesn't believe the videotape of his son's execution or what he's been told by the FBI any more than he believes conspiracy theories suggesting his son was killed by the U.S. government.

"I think the news of the loss of any human being is a tragedy. I think al-Zarqawi's death is a double tragedy," he said. "His death will incite a new wave of revenge. George Bush and al-Zarqawi are two men who believe in revenge."

Berg said "restorative justice," - such as being forced to work in a hospital where maimed children are treated - could have made al-Zarqawi "a decent human being.

Force to him work in a hospital? LOL.

Agreed.

And as a self-identified liberal and (unfortunately, sometimes, I think, LOL) registered Democrat, I for one am not shedding any tears over Zarqawi.

Did you really just put "smart", "liberal", and "democrat" in the same sentence? ;)
