t is no secret that President-elect Obama had a Kenyan father. But he is not the first president of our country to have at least one foreign born parent.

Mr. Obama will be the seventh man sworn in as President of the United States who has a parent born outside our borders. The other six are:

* Thomas Jefferson (English mother)

* Andrew Jackson (Scots-Irish parents emigrated from Northern Ireland);

* James Buchanan (Irish father)

* Chester Arthur (Irish father)

* Woodrow Wilson (Scottish mother);

* and Herbert Hoover (English-Irish mother).

Of those, only Andrew Jackson's parents were both not born American. Also, only three of the the six were close to remarkable:

* Jefferson - one of our Founding Fathers, as our third president: he completed the Louisiana Purchase and commissioned Lewis & Clark's expedition to the Pacific;

* Jackson - the champion of the Battle of New Orleans, as our seventh president, he: democratized America and helped create the Democratic Party; reduced the federal debt to its lowest since the early days of the republic; opposed the Electoral College; opposed the establishment of a national bank, feeling it put too much money in the hands of the few;

* and Wilson (who incidentally began his law career in Atlanta) - as our 28th president, he: established the Federal Reserve; negotiated the Adamson Act that made work days eight hours at equal pay; established the Federal Trade Commission to deal with anti-trust issues; engaged the US in World War I, which, by the way, he helped negotiate a peaceful conclusion to on Armistice Day (November 11, 1918), earning himself a Nobel Prize for his efforts; first to visit Europe while in office; first to visit the Pope while in office. Oh, and declared the first national Mothers' Day.

Where do these men rate in the pantheon of American presidents?

Well, according to a survey of 78 history, political and legal scholars done in October, 2000, and co-sponsored by the Federalist Society and the Wall Street Journal, Buchanan comes in dead last, for his failure - presumably - to do anything about the disintegration of the Union through the Southern secessions that eventually led to the Civil War.

The survey, which excluded James Garfield and William Harrison due to the brevity of their terms, ranked Jefferson fourth, Jackson sixth and Wilson eleventh. They were among what the survey called "near great." Chester Arthur comes in 26th, at the lower end of "average," and Hoover comes in on the "below average" scale at 29th, right behind Gerald Ford.

He just needs to father some illegitimate poor white children, preferably from some of the servants in the White House and he'll be fully initiated into the annals of history.

like clinton? :whistle:

Go back farther, Charles. All the way back to the third president and principal author of our beloved Constitution for which Justice Thomas is most concerned about.
