The U.S. military expects to have 20,000 uniformed troops inside the United States by 2011 trained to help state and local officials respond to a nuclear terrorist attack or other domestic catastrophe, according to Pentagon officials.

The Bush administration and some in Congress have pushed for a heightened homeland military role since the middle of this decade, saying the greatest domestic threat is terrorists exploiting the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

The Pentagon's plan calls for three rapid-reaction forces to be ready for emergency response by September 2011.

If funding continues, two additional teams will join nearly 80 smaller National Guard and reserve units made up of about 6,000 troops in supporting local and state officials nationwide. All would be trained to respond to a domestic chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, or high-yield explosive attack, or CBRNE event, as the military calls it.

The American Civil Liberties Union and the libertarian Cato Institute are troubled by what they consider an expansion of executive authority.

Domestic emergency deployment may be "just the first example of a series of expansions in presidential and military authority," or even an increase in domestic surveillance, said Anna Christensen of the ACLU's National Security Project. And Cato Vice President Gene Healy warned of "a creeping militarization" of homeland security.

"There's a notion that whenever there's an important problem, that the thing to do is to call in the boys in green," Healy said, "and that's at odds with our long-standing tradition of being wary of the use of standing armies to keep the peace."

Why not? We bomb and destroy property all over the world and then spend a fortune to help rebuild the country we desroyed, why not just do it here? It would create millions of jobs and the economy would be back to normal in no time. And all the money would stay right here at home. No need for any loss of life either. The targeted areas could all be evacuated so no one would be hurt. It would easy to control here, no insurgents, no loss of civilian or military life. I think I'm onto something here, I have to give Obama a call.

My neighbor lady in the NG is scheduled to go to Iraq in the middle of January next year about six weeks from new for 18 months leaving her husband and seven year old daughter behind along with thousands of others from the Wisconsin National guard. While we had major floods in the southern portion of our state last spring, very few NG's around to help out the flood victims.

Our college tuition increased by $6,000 per year for our daughter, state claims lack of federal funds which is suppose to be our share of federal income tax we are suppose to receive. State claims increased taxes next year because of lack of fund with a 5.6 billion dollar deficit. While unemployment is skyrocketing.

Some idiots in our state government are talking about increasing corporation taxes, they already have leaving towns with populations of 30,000 with severe layoffs of 3,000 some people. They just shut down and move to another state. Never in my lifetime had I experience such a bunch of idiots running this country.

My young neighbor lady is going down to Georgia for a whole six weeks of training before going to Iraq, hope that is enough and she doesn't get killed defending a bunch of people that do not want defended. Why can't we send our leaders instead?

Getting to the point now where are real enemies are in Madison and Washington DC., perhaps it's time for us to become troops to defend our country.

That pissed off feeling you've got. That ball of rage that's building in your gut and your throat,

I've got little extra sympathy for the NG after they've known for the last 7 years that they will probably face deployment overseas- that's part of the job. Alternatively, they can not join and whine about the high cost of tuition like everyone else.

The Wisconsin NG are better off than most states.

"Lt. Col. Tim Donovan, Wisconsin National Guard spokesman, said that while some resources are overseas, his state's guard has enough resources on hand to respond to stateside emergencies. His state has nearly 75% of its equipment on hand and available, some 57,000 items. "Ranging from French horns to howitzers and everything in between," Donovan said."

Unemployment is skyrocketing in Wisconsin? 5.1% isn't that high compared to the rest of the country. It's 7% in Georgia where I live and 9.3% in Michigan and Rhode Island. http://money.cnn.com/pf/features/lists/state_unemployment/

Now wait a minute, I can see destroying a few citites here and there, but no need for loss of anyones life. The medical sector jobs will increase due to the increase in construction activity, hence more accidents, cuts and bruises. The automakers can make tanks and planes again like they did in WWII, etc. It is a perfect plan that will start the road to economic recovery, reunite familes that have been separated by years of war and we'll have all the troops here to seal the borders and thwart any terrorist attacks. It's a win win situation.
