Bloody Sunday!!!

Just wanted to rant a little here coz what happened this morning is completely out of line!

Around 10 this morning there was a loud bang on the door, mind you since my husband came home after 2 AM we are still in bed by that time. Stumbling, he got up and opened the door. I couldn’t really hear much except for “Elvis!!! Elvis!!!” Our dog must’ve tried to sneak out when he open the door. Then I heard some yelling.

“Where is she???!!! Tell her to come out!!!” and I hear my husband said “She’s in bed. She is asleep!” That man’s voice keeps rising up and it really start to get on my nerves so I got up then went outside to the living room and said “What is going on?”

Guess who???? It’s that stupid cop (or sheriff or whatever he is!) that came to our place last May 2 (read the story here). This time he didn’t wear his uniform and he said to me “Ma’am you have to go outside!” I was complaining and demanding what is going on. He insisted that I have to step outside and he snapped at my husband “Sir, you go in the kitchen!!!”.

Outside there were 4 or 5 guys standing and waiting. Again, I demanded some explanation. Heck…somebody barged into our place in the morning while we are still asleep, don’t you think we deserve some kind of explanation even if it’s the police that came??? Believe it or not…those guys shush me! “You know what…this is way out of line. This is the 3rd time you guys made such a huge mistake and this is just WRONG!!!!” I start to get so pissed but again they just ignored me like I’m not even there.

Imagine…my embarrassment when our next door neighbor parked his car and saw the whole things? He didn’t say anything and just went to his apartment but I can tell he’s confuse. I could hear shouts from inside our place and I just soooo itchy to kick those jerks asses.

That big fat red neck cop then came out after a few minutes and went to his patrol car, talked on the radio and said “Ma’am, what is your name?” I said “Don’t you suppose to ask me that first??? It’s Maureen R...!” He didn’t say anything and went back inside.

Again, he came out and he said “Ma’am you can come in. I’m sorry.” and just left. Can you believe that???? They all left like there’s nothing wrong. God, I really feel like I wanna shout and give them some Indonesian lessons.

According to my husband these are bits & pieces of their ‘shouts’ inside:

Jerk Cop: “The first time, I let you go but I’m not gonna let you slide this time!!!”

Hubby: “You guys should really check your 911 system! This is the third time something like this happen.”

Jerk Cop: Keep trying to push my husband around by shouting and telling him that he won’t tolerate a man who beats his wife.

Hubby: “Could you shut up for God’s sake! Shut up!”

Jerk Cop still talking, my hubby went into our room to get his wallet. The cop followed him and yelled “Sir…sir stop! Stop! Stop!”

Hubby handed him his driver’s license (he couldn’t find my passport).

Apparently after he saw the name he went outside to his car. When he came back inside he said “I’m sorry Sir.” But my husband just said “Well you can tell that to my lawyer & I hope that women who really need you guys don’t end up in a body bag by the time you got there!!!”

OMG…OMG…OMG!!! This is just crazily out of line of what???

The second time this happened was a few days after May 2 while my husband already at work but I believe the one who came knocking on our door was a ‘real’ police because he have a black uniforms (the other guy wear something like a sheriff or deputy uniform). He was polite and double check everything by asking our full address and my name then admitted they got the wrong address.

My husband is actually thinking about calling a lawyer tomorrow. What do you think guys? Should we sue them or what??? Thanks for reading this & sorry for such a long post.

Hi Maureen,

Unless they put their hands on you or hubby-there isn't much you can do legally. They woke you up, and embarrassed you, which is truly terrible !

I know I'd be pissed as the day's long. You can file a complaint, but in the end-I don't know how far you can take it on a legal front.

I wish you peace, and I am sorry that you began your day in such an awful manner.

Maureen, no opinions on what you should do, but that IS just WRONG! They have to investigate all 911s and all that, sure, but to have the address mixed up THAT many times??? That's just insane. Also, you're right..they should have asked for your name first, addresses, if you were hurt, etc..not just dive-bomb you like screeching banchees...good grief! Mostly tho, I agree with your husband...I feel sorry for the poor woman who really DID call 911. M.

ESPECIALLY when it's a 911 call..the FIRST time they got it wrong(in case there's something wrong in the system misdirecting them to YOUR address) they should have checked it out and corrected it..not the 3rd! time!

Thank you Rose, Michelle. Yes maybe that's right all we could do is file for a complaint to the police station. I just so furious with the way they came and treated my husband like somekind of a wife beater or some low criminal.

Hiya! I don't know what type of house/or apartment building you live in, but my mother was a phone operator and worked on the phone lines, so this may or may not help. ON the outside of the house or building somewhere, there will be a grey box (or they use to be grey). All that keeps the box closed are two screws which anyone can open. Inside this box is the line that goes into the house. The line is plugged into the grey box and has a regular phone jack bit that is just like the one that is on a phone. Anyone can take a phone upto that grey box and make a phone call!! Trust me on this one. I am sure someone has had phone calls on their phone bills for which you cannot explain. It happened to an aunt of mine. She recieved her phone bill and it was around 1500.00 dollars!! There were 900 numbers and calls to south america I believe. It was her neighbour. He was eventually caught but I don't remember what happened to him.

I thought about posting this because I don't want to give anyone ideas, but then I thought well perhaps someone may have had this problem before. I am not sure if you can put your own lock on that said box, you may want to call the phone company about that one. I would ask my mother for you, lol but she doesnt approve of my international husband so we are no longer on speaking terms. lol. Hope you get this sorted. Also, someone said that unless the cops have touched you, there is nothing you can do. That is not true. You need to get the badge numbers off the cops ID. If they don't let you have it, that is an offense on their part. Get their names and report them to their commanding officer. This is harrassment on their part if they keep this up if not already. Don't let them use their position to bully you, they can be suspended for this.

my 2 cents

Write a polite letter to the Chief (that is, the head of ALL the local unit), explaining this is not the first time this has ocurred and giving all the details (like name mix up etc). State that you appreciate the officers who called were acting on what they thought was the actual situation they had been informed about and ask if there is anything you can do, with his assistance, to prevent this from happening in the future as it has distressed your family.

Keep the tone polite and respectful - you may need these guys one day and the last thing you want to do is piss them off - as this will (or SHOULD if the Chief is politcally savvy) set the tone for his response.

Don't grab for a lwayer right off the bat or make threats - remember the person READING your letter may have no info on your case (he wasn't there) - and you want a fair hearing.

Once he replies you can take it from there - PLUS there will be something ON FILE about the previous issues.

Best of luck and I'm sorry you had to go thru that - it must have been scary.

I'd be really angry as well...really really angry. BUT I think I'd save myself expending the effort, the money and the tax payers money and try to let it go. I understand how angry you must be - but at the end of the day I'd still feel pretty happy you aren't the couple they were REALLY looking for.

I hope the woman who did need the police was helped in time and GOT OUT for good.

Here is some information that might help (Let a lawyer tell you whether you have a case or not - at least you should be able to file something with a "civilian complaint board".) I am sorry this has happen to you but I wouldn't get a lawyer involed at this time. The officer were not outline because they were responding to a "so call" 911. Yes Dothan, like a lot of cities here in Alabama, have the 'good ole boy" system when it come to the Police Department. There are some well trained and great officer on the force but there are some who don't need to be police officer.

Make a appointment with the Chief or the Commander in charge of patrol divison. Please make sure you have the officer(s) name or badge number because I am sure that will be the first thing they ask for but tell them you know the officer(s) are doing their job by responding to the 911 calls. You feel like there is something wrong with the E911 system because the officer(s) are responding to the wrong address.If Dothan doesn't have a E911 system, just the old 911 system that could be some of the reason the officer(s) are coming to the wrong address. The old 911 system will send calls to other Police departments in your area, Headland Opp, Fort Rucker, Enterprise and then these Police Department would call Dothan to informed them of the address of the 911 call. If this is the case more than likely someone wrote down the wrong address before sending the officer(s) out of the call. For everyone sake in Dothan I hope they have the E911 system.

If you feel like this meeting isn't going to resolve the issue than contact the Mayor's office and of course get your councilperson for your area involed.

No, I wouldn't get a lawyer either..at all. I mean, it was rude, annoying, unprofessional, etc..the way the police handled the situation...but, all in all, you were slightly inconvenienced and really annoyed, and that's it. You know? I don't know..but it APPEARS to be an error in the 911 system or something...I really doubt the police are just out to annoy you. (This next not aimed at you, but a general statement....) Frivilous lawsuits are such a big deal in this country...people are always looking for a reason to sue. To me, no offence Elizabethnhenry, but that recommendation in all caps..make sure you tell them you're pregnant and etc etc...is ridiculous. We all know pregnant women shouldn't experience too much stress(or ANY of us for that matter!!!) but I'm sure you and your baby are just fine and that would just be something to 'use'.....you know? (sorry, I didn't read that you were? She must just know that or I missed it..congrats anyway!) Again, not pointing fingers here....general statement. I think people are just WAYYY to quick to jump on the 'gonna sue you' bandwagon...on the other hand, I've heard my dad, myself, etc etc say something liike 'you can tell that to my lawyer' when really ticked off....and nothing ever comes of it. Just something to say at the time when you're really ticked off, or to scares someone a bit...nothin' wrong with THAT if they're bein' ###*s right? Just to clear in the event anyone else misunderstands what I wrote:

Please read carefully. I never recommended that she sue anyone. I simply said she should let a lawyer tell her whether what happened to her is worthy of a suit. I included a lawyer that specialzes in police misconduct in her city, as they would be able to know if there is a history of "issues" with that sherrif's department. They might tell her suing is a waste of time, but give her other options to make sure it does not happen again.

The pregnant "recommendation" will cause someone who would otherwise chew gum in her ear, to perhaps listen to her. That's all.
