Hi, We haven't quite reached our interview stage yet (still awaiting pkg 3). I am wondering since we are getting into winter - how soon after we enter the USA does our belongings have to follow? We plan on hiring a moving company but if it is -50 I don't really want my glasswares being thrown around in a truck!

Is there a grace period to bring your belongings in? I have looked a few places but can't find the information. Also - does anyone have any moving companies they recommend?

Thanks!

No such thing as a deadline on "goods" relocating into the USA that I am aware of.... Each trip back we are still relocating goods after almost two years

belive it is up to 10 yrs

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Here are some threads on moving goods, U-haul vs U-pack, and moving companies

Here is a thread as well from someone who had their parents bring down more stuff for them after she was here in the US and married.

Yes, I believe it's 10 years. Things can't preceed you as well.

Thanks everyone! I was so worried about how we would afford a huge move on top of everything else. Since three of us are moving from Northern Saskatchewan to Texas!

Heheheheehe that is a BIG move - you'll enjoy winters in Texas after Northern Saskatchewan:-) - summers - not so much (maybe):-). No black flies, though.

Yes, your personal effects may accompany you when you cross the border or up to 10 years afterwards.

The vast majority of my belongings were shipped to me via moving company almost a year after we were married. They were efficient, professional and extremely helpful -- even better, nothing was scratched or broken (and we had lots of fragile stuff involved).

Yes, your personal effects may accompany you when you cross the border or up to 10 years afterwards.

That would depend on where you move to in Texas. For instance, cities in the panhandle (such as Amarillo) can get quite cold during the winter. Not as cold as most Canadian provinces, but still colder than one might think for Texas. As for summers... well, that also depends where you are. Most people think Texas is hot and dry. That's true if you live somewhere like El Paso, but if you're in Houston, it's hot and humid. In fact, it's sometimes so humid there, I can walk out of the house or get out of my car and my glasses will immediately fog up.

I will be moving to Houston. I know it does get cooler - but nothing compared to our winters.
