Obama victory sparks cheers around the globe

By JOHN LEICESTER, Associated Press Writer John Leicester, Associated Press Writer – 1 hr 12 mins ago

PARIS – Barack Obama's election as America's first black president unleashed a renewed love for the United States after years of dwindling goodwill, and many said Wednesday that U.S. voters had blazed a trail that minorities elsewhere could follow.

People across Africa stayed up all night or woke before dawn to watch U.S. history being made, while the president of Kenya — where Obama's father was born — declared a public holiday.

In Indonesia, where Obama lived as child, hundreds of students at his former elementary school erupted in cheers when he was declared winner and poured into the courtyard where they hugged each other, danced in the rain and chanted "Obama! Obama!"

"Your victory has demonstrated that no person anywhere in the world should not dare to dream of wanting to change the world for a better place," South Africa's first black president, Nelson Mandela, said in a letter of congratulations to Obama.

Many expressed amazement and satisfaction that the United States could overcome centuries of racial strife and elect an African-American as president.

Not surprising given that Hollywood has produced a lot of movies showing how racist most Americans really are. Now if people in Kenya could straighten out their own violent elections or stop the persecution of Christians in Indonesia then I would feel equally proud of them.

"One Liberal suggested the Democrat's win would ease criticism of the Conservatives, who have been dogged by accusations their views share an unpopular alignment with those of current U.S. President George W. Bush.

"We can't play the Bush card on them anymore," the Liberal said, asking not to be quoted by name. "

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt

Thought a "Flash Back" might be nice.

So you think it's smart that half the idiots who plague this sinking country, assume they are 'getting at Obama' by voting for anyone? Even voting for one of those brain-dead teaparty idiots.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

as opposed to the brain-dead Dem idiots?

I'm just laughing at the hacks in both parties, who will be voting 'straight party ticket' today.... That's what is always amusing...

It would make my day if Reid or Pelosi were to lose their seats though... I would get drunk and stumble in here late tonight if that happens.

Reid probably will be unemployed but Pelosi is in a safe district.

Dems are wrong on a lot of things but write on fiscal policy. Hence why the rest of the first world, as in everyone excluding the US, has these in practice. The liberteapartian approach on the other hand, can can only be found in the 1700s history books and in third world countries today. And the Regan days, when America's demise began.

Just not defense spending hey, that's good spending. How about the two wars at a cost of over $1 trillion, which is on top of the annual one trillion plus spent on defense.

As has already been pointed out many many times before [using actual data] that other countries spend more, yet are doing well - better actually.

Your type wants to apparently "pay off debt", yet do not want to get another job [aka tax] or cut spending wasted - poured down the toilet - on going out [defense].

Where do you want to cut back? Where us but utilities. Why do you need a light on right? It's a luxury.
