U.S. intelligence analysts eavesdropped on personal calls between Americans overseas and their families back home and monitored the communications of workers with the Red Cross and other humanitarian organizations, according to two military linguists involved in U.S. surveillance programs.

...

The linguists said that recordings of intimate conversations between citizens and their loved ones were sometimes passed around, out of prurient interest, among analysts at an electronic surveillance facility at Ft. Gordon, Ga.

...

"I observed people writing down, word for word, very embarrassing conversations," Faulk told The Times. "People would say, 'Hey, check this out, you're not going to believe what I heard.' "

Their claims were reported Thursday by ABC News.

It was field operatives that stepped over the line. Now many years ago way before all this 911 stuff, I was in the military overseas and we called back home we knew we were possibly being monitored. This goes way back. The NIA has always monitored most calls made overseas. Is it right? No but it is a program that has been around way before Bush came to office.

I did not realize we were in the midst of a World War. Silly me.

it's a military thing ... and has been done before during times of conflict ...

what is the real difference between then ... and now?

It has always been done and even during peacetime. The NIA is a huge info gathering entity. Just think of this. When we call or are chatting with our loved ones even in yahoo chat or anything they can be listening in. This program has been around for ages and to blame this admin is rediculous. It is wrong now to do it and it was wrong way back when.

Gee folks. This ####### has been going on for a long time. Why the uproar now? Oh yeah y'alls hated President is still in office. Guess the Dems in office when this was going on was ok. They had to be a lot more honest.

at that time sections of letters were removed or "blacked out" so it was known the mail was read by censors ...

Actually Natty you are thinking of writing letters from military posts. This is a different program that the article is talking about. It monitors all calls made from overseas. We were told when we arrived at a new base and we were making a call that our calls MAY be monitored.

Most people do not realize that any calls made by ANYONE overseas (There or here) could be monitored and listened. This is way before 911 and has been or was the sole focus of the National Intelligence Agency for most of their being. Now they are tasked with new powers and all but all calls can be monitored. It has been known for many years that since the internet came into being that they could also monitor communications by messengers and other things. Again way before Bush came into office.
