I'm moving, not from state to state or anywhere but it is a complete move and it sucks.

Hubbie is at work every day including the weekend and I'm stuck with all the work. I have been renovating the new house (dad-in-law bought it and I was in charge of the extreme makeover from cat-lady hole to mansion :P ) and now doing the move and I can't seem to get any help from anyone.

I'm getting frustrated, at least I don't have to lift the heavy furniture, Hubbie's friends are doing that (I guess, with them you never know)

Why does Hubbie so much #######? (Want huge trashbag the size of apartment!)

Sorry for the rant, but moving just sux!

I hear you. We have just under three weeks until we hit the road again. And it's a long distance move for sure. I look at it as an opportunity to separate myself from a lot of stuff that I really don't need. Nani and I decided that everything that we haven't touched since we moved here a little over a year ago is not being moved but is rather going to be donated. We thought about just getting rid of everything and starting from scratch down in FL but there is more stuff that's not easily or at all replaceable than we can fit into the car. So, since we'll need a small truck anyways, we may as well take with us whatever fits in there and just get rid of the rest. It'll be interesting to unload the truck down there. I have help here but there I don't. Still trying to figure that one out...

Moving for me isn't fun. My husband has so much stuff, too.

The last time we talked about moving (whether to a different apartment in the same city, or to a different state), he said that I won't need to get rid of any of my stuff. At the moment, I don't have a lot of things because I was slowly mailing boxes to him. So everything I wanted to keep I had to send in like 20 medium-sized boxes or something like that. What I have left here in Canada is just some clothes and stuff that could easily fit in 2 huge suitcases and a couple of boxes.

One of my friends helped me pack one day and she threw out a lot of my stuff. It was easy for her to do that because she didn't have any "history" with the items.

I should say, though, that it was great to get rid of a lot of junk I've accumulated throughout the years.

ET are you and Nanni going to be moving down here yourself or are you getting movers to help? The company is giving you some sort of moving allowance, I presume?

Yes but we are still moving ourselves. Well, I'll be doing the moving. Nani won't lift or move anything since she's taking care of our baby.

I've played it through and it's just not worth what it would cost to have a mover do it. We really don't have that much stuff to move to begin with and seeing the mileage, we'd easily reach the point where buying new what we're looking to move would cost about the same as moving it. Then I'd rather buy new. But that brings me back to square one in terms of the stuff that I need to move because it can't be replaced which I won't be able to fit into my car...

ET if you rent a U-Haul or similar, find out from the rental company if there's anyone at the other end who would be willing for a few bucks to help you unload.

When James and I went looking for rental moving vans, the local here said they even have drivers who will go long haul for a small fee. We may end up doing that. If we ever find somewhere to move to that is!

No U-Haul. I've seen too many of those broken down on the side of the highway. Penske or Budget is more like it. They seem to have a newer fleet of vehicles. And yes, my car will be in tow. As for the unloading part, I am quite certain that I'll find a helpful person for those few pieces that I'd have trouble moving off the truck myself. No biggie. I'll make sure to have a cold beer handy and someone will bite. ;)

You have my sympathy! I've moved seven times in six years, including three times since we got married less than two years ago. I did the first two moves all by myself because my job offered paid vacation and G's didn't. The latest move, from New Jersey to New Mexico, we did in a total of just under four weeks from my being offered the job until we were in the new apartment. Gareth did that one almost entirely by himself--he found out a week before I got my job that he was being laid off (actually, the company moved to New York, and he could have stayed on, but a 45-minute commute wasn't worth it for $12/hour). So his job ended about two weeks before we moved.

We hired a fantastic moving company, and although it was really expensive (we ended up borrowing money from my grandparents to pay all the expenses), it was totally worth it. We packed most things ourselves, but they packed the electronics and breakables (so they'd have to pay if they were broken), loaded and unloaded the truck, drove cross-country, and disassembled and reassembled the furniture. I don't think I'll ever move on my own with a U-Haul again (actually, I agree that U-Haul sucks and I'd never use them again anyway--for the next-to-last move we used Budget, and they were okay). Everything went as well as could be expected when moving cross-country with two cats. In fact, I'd say this was the easiest move.

Best of luck with the move! We're actually looking at buying a house when this lease is up (9 months left) so I guess we may be moving again.

I hear you Reinhard. U-haul SUCKS! When we moved from Upstate NY to AL we booked one trailer from U-haul and guess what...in the morning we supposed to pick it up they said to us over the phone "What kind of car do you drive?" Hubby said "Ford" and he said "Oh, I'm sorry Sir but we are currently have a dispute with Ford and until it is solve, we are not allowed to rent our trailers to Ford vehicles." What the....??? So we ended up moving with what we could stuffed into the car. I agree about the moving company, they're sooo expensive lol.

Good luck with your moving Germanangel & Reinhard!
