Depends on which state you live in. Each state has different rules for issuance of state IDs. The state IDs are usually issued by the same state agency that issues drivers licenses. Go to the appropriate agency's website and research the matter.

Take a look at your state's DMV, a lot of times it is the DMV that issues I.D.s

In my experience, we went to DMV and they dont give me state id coz they ask my SSN and my SSn is under my single name, so the girl said that they cant give me state id, she said i need to change my single name to married name of my SSN first. Im really so sad, i think i iwll wait till i got my ead coz the SSN will not change my name till the USCIS will update my married name

I've just come back from the local DMV office where I was given temporary State ID card. I'll get the real thing in the mail in about a week!

I'm amazed as I arrived here just two weeks ago on K1 visa, don't have SSN yet and am not getting married till April 22. All I showed were my passport with unexpired I-94 and my temporary medical insurance card (which I bought on the internet before I came out in order to cover the time before we get married) as second ID and the envelope it came in to show my new address. I love Montana!! (L)

Claudeth had to file for a state I.D. because the credit union I belong to wouldn't give her an account without the I.D. They wouldn't recognize her EAD or passport as a valid I.D. but when we went to the DMV the lady there asked why they wouldn't accept the EAD, it is a Federally issued I.D. that the state of California accepts so didn't understand why the credit union wouldn't. Oh well, she will get the I.D. in about 4 weeks then she can open up an account.

I got a state ID in Maine with a letter stating I was not eligible for a SSN (I didn't enter on K1) and a copy of my marriage certificate and NOA. I did have to push for it though.

A state ID looks very similar to a drivers licence, and mine lists my name, address, DOB, height, weight, eye colour and hair colour - but not everyone's does!
