Hello

I suspect that my daughters boyfriend will soon propose marriage. They have dated four years. She is American born citizen 23 yrs old. He 25 yrs old and green card holder residing in USA for last seven yrs. While I have " suggested " that he become US citizen during one conversation in the past, no action has been taken on his part to apply.

I request from anyone out there, a few persuasive talking points on why he should apply for citizenship.

I am not an eloquent debator or speaker, so any good thoughts, quotes or remarks that I could recite to this young man would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

I have read that there are certain rights that a US citizen is entitled to (that a Green Card holder is not) with respect to rights after their US citizen spouse dies.

Green Card holders also cannot vote in government elections.

Depending on which country he is from, he could have dual citizenship (US and whatever country he's from if allowed). I am Canadian, and intend to have dual citizenship so that I will be able to live in Canada or the U.S. without any time limits on how long I am away or how long I stay.

So, there you go.... a few points in favor of citizenship.

Might I ask why it's such a big deal? I mean, you seem really upset that he's not a US citizen. And you expect this man to have done something because you once suggested it ... although I wonder if you're using the quotation marks to mean it wasn't really a suggestion. Frankly if my father-in-law-to-be were to "suggest" that I do anything, I would think about it for all of three seconds. If it were something my spouse thought I should do, then we'd talk about it. But why would I, a fully-grown adult, do *anything* just because one of my in-laws wanted me to? Heck, I don't do things just because my own parents want me to.

I mean, sure, there are good reasons to become a US citizen, especially if one's home country allows dual nationality, but why are you so hung up on this?

If you can take any more of it, search that group. It comes up every now and again.

Personally I will be going for US citizenship myself, but part of the reason I decided to do it was because I don't LOSE my UK citizenship / nationality.

Are you concerned over the 'posible son-in-law' just picking up and leaving the US if he's not a citizen? Cos he could do that anyway.

I too am curious why you are worried about his lack of citizenship - I suspect it comes from some as yet unmentioned worry over the relationship as a whole (which is natural as you're a mom), but bottom line is its your DAUGHTER'S relationship, and if it doesn't bother her, then you have to keep your own counsel on it.

I hope it all works out, whatever happens.
