Since Isa, the boys, and I are currently in Brazil, can someone drive by our place in NW Houston and let me know if it's still there?

It will be a while before anyone in Houston gets this message. Over 4 million are without power - only immediately downtown has power because their electrical wires are underground. The mayor has called on Houstonians to stay off of the roads to allow emergency personnel a chance to do necessary search and rescue, and to try and take care of the power situation. Harris county residents are being asked to boil their water for 1 minute (interesting how they would do this with no power . . .). My in-laws live in Spring and The Woodlawns. So far so good - trees and tree branches down and minor damage to houses so far but so far so good. The south part of the storm is still going through Houston right now so they still have hurricane winds - steady winds over 53 mph with gusts up to 80 in the northwest part of the City according to meterological reports. Very wet , windy and rainy according to my mother-in-law who is still hunkered down.

Your house is probably fine.

I stayed up till the wee hours of the morning watching the coverage.

I hope that the people who decided not to heed the warnings to evacuate are okay.... :(

The only funny thing was that I was flipping back and fourth between Fox News and CNN and on Fox News, Geraldo Rivera was right there in Galveston, right on the beach it seemed and he was getting the ####### kicked out of him, wind, debris....man it was brutal. I just kept yelling at the TV, "PUT YOUR HOOD ON!!!" "OMG DUCK, GET OUT OF THE WAY GERALDO!!!" LOL

It sucks they couldn't find a more secure place to broadcast from like one of the CNN crews..they were in a 4 level parking garage and seemed pretty safe and secure...although behind them was chaos.

Thinking of everyone down there!!!

I saw that too.

Natty, at least Texas is getting national coverage. Gustav didn't.

We stayed in NW Houston to ride out Ike and it was mostly ok although pretty scary! We slept in the bathroom as we thought a tree might come through the bedroom window. It came down in the night, thankfully not through the window. We had a leaky door and 2 leaky windows, but that was it. However, without water or power we decided to leave Houston once the winds had died down. We're staying with friends in the Hill Country until there's a bit more normality in the city!

All the best to those who were much more seriously affected, and to those involved in the relief efforts too :)

My in-laws still have no power or water either and they too have left to go and live with a relative about 100 miles to the west of Houston until power is restored and amenities are more available. They had trees down and only minor damage to their homes but are in need of basics so this was their choice as well. Joe's sister is in the Woodlands - they have no power but they do have gas and water so are riding it out for now.

Our best wishes to all affected as well.

Some photos of the damage in my area....I live close to downtown, so we got some very bad winds, and these are pictures just of my apt. complex and around my block. There are other areas that are much much worse off than what is in these pictures.

Day seven without power and counting....

I have a friend who is currently in Houston helping with some clean up efforts. The stories and pictures are just heartbreaking. I'm so sorry, guys. I hope all your lives go back to normal very soon.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip
