Experience is not good indicator of success. Lets look at two presidents, both Republicans.

Bush served served about 5 years as the Governor of Texas, but has had the lowest approval ratings of any president ever.

Lincoln served two years in the House of Representatives and held no other elected office before being elected president, but yet has been regarded as one of the country's best presidents.

that also depends on how one defines being a good president, does it not? one could say the usa came apart during his presidency.

lincoln does not rank in the top 5 for me.

Movement towards the civil war was well underway before he became president. However, he was successful in keeping the country together.

He also did not want to punish the south after the war ended but rather wanted to integrate them back into America. Whereas Andrew Johnson was keen on punishing the south.

SVRT must be proud. White on white hate..

That is because slavery was only an ancillary, yet important, reason, for the Civil War. Reunification of a divided nation was the primary cause. Punishing the South would be like wanting to sow future conflict.

no, he was not. it did come apart.

Yet by his death the country wasn't split in two.

i'm not real sure what history book you're reading, but wiki shows it was........

Seven Deep South cotton states seceded by February 1861, starting with South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. These seven states formed the Confederate States of America (February 4, 1861), with Jefferson Davis as president, and a governmental structure closely modeled on the U.S. Constitution. Following the attack on Fort Sumter, President Lincoln called for a volunteer army from each state. Within two months, four more Southern slave states declared their secession and joined the Confederacy: Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina and Tennessee. The northwestern portion of Virginia subsequently seceded from Virginia, joining the Union as the new state of West Virginia on June 20, 1863. By the end of 1861, Missouri and Kentucky were divided -- each of them having a pro-Southern and pro-Northern government.

lincoln assassinated April 14, 1865.

lincoln assassination

And the war ended, according to our Wiki sources... about a week before his untimely demise.

We got to remember that by our constitution the states have a right to leave the union. What Lincoln did was very much contrary to the constitution.

Wow, Gary is arguing that the Civil War should not have been fought and the CSA should exist today. So if you follow the slippery slope, Negroes should still be enslaved.

Niiiice.

Not sure if that's what he's defending... but the 13th Amendment was ratified right after the Civil War. And that whole 'States Rights' argument took a back seat to a centralized, Federal government. Until recently, of course, as a way of pushing particular political agendas that often impose certain limitations of people's rights.

also untrue........which you'd know if you'd read all the wiki article.

Lee surrendered his Army of Northern Virginia on April 9, 1865, at Appomattox Court House.[94] In an untraditional gesture and as a sign of Grant's respect and anticipation of folding the Confederacy back into the Union with dignity and peace, Lee was permitted to keep his officer's saber and his horse, Traveller On April 14, 1865, Lincoln was shot. Andrew Johnson became President when Lincoln died the next day. Johnston surrendered his troops to Sherman on April 26, 1865, in Durham, North Carolina. On June 23, 1865, at Fort Towson in the Choctaw Nations' area of the Oklahoma Territory, Stand Watie signed a cease-fire agreement with Union representatives, becoming the last Confederate general in the field to stand down. The last Confederate naval force to surrender was the CSS Shenandoah on November 4, 1865, in Liverpool, England.

How do they pretend to be objective journalists?

BTW - let's drop the "some" for a change and just come out and say who you're talking about

Umm, this is how one "pretends".....project an image of impartiality but then unable to follow through......

Olbermann began to have difficulty keeping his opinions in check, or simply stopped trying.

He sarcastically dismissed GOP pundit Pat Buchanan on the air after Buchanan said the Republicans had been enlivened by the entrance of a conservative Republican.

"Those reading US Weekly with the picture of her and her youngest daughter with the word `scandal' written across it won't be so happy," Olbermann said.

He expressed little sympathy at another point when GOP anger at rumors over the Internet about Palin were being discussed.

"We'll see if people feel sorry for unfounded rumors on the Internet," he said. "If that's the case, Senator Obama's probably standing up and cheering and waiting for people to feel sorry for him."

Perhaps most embarrassing, Joe Scarborough was discussing positive developments in John McCain's campaign at one point when Olbermann was heard on an offstage microphone saying: "Jesus, Joe, why don't you get a shovel?"

Scarborough, a former Republican congressman and host of MSNBC's "Morning Joe," got in another nasty on-air exchange with MSNBC reporter David Shuster, and Matthews snapped at Olbermann on-air when it appeared Olbermann was criticizing him for talking too much.

All the drama made MSNBC a punch line when top NBC anchor Brian Williams appeared on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" last week. "Is there no control?" host Jon Stewart asked him. "`Is it `Lord of the Flies?'"

A sheepish Williams said that every family has a dynamic of its own.

"But does MSNBC have to be the Lohans?" Stewart said.

Olbermann was in Denver during the Democratic national convention, but performed his co-hosting duties for the GOP convention in a New York studio. NBC President Steve Capus said the decision was not political, that Olbermann had been sent back to anchor coverage of Hurricane Gustav.

MSNBC's decision comes just before Olbermann's "Countdown" show is set to air, on Monday, his interview with Barack Obama. That will put Olbermann in direct competition with his nemesis, Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly, who interviewed Obama last week and is airing a portion of it Monday in the same 8 p.m. EDT time slot.

I been to quite a few places in the south and met a quite few people whose great great grandparents where slaves, yet they still keep in touch and meet up with the family, blood-line, who owned them.

You may also want to look at what actual percentage of white Americans owned slaves at the time. The last time I checked the figure was roughly 1.9%. Yet approximately 4% of African Americans are convicted of a crime. Therefore, based on the foundation of your logic, all African Americans in 2008 are criminals. That is, considering that you believe all white Americans were evil slave owners; based on the ridiculously small number of Americans who actually owned slaves.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

But Olbermann has an established record as a partisan commentator.

Does he not?

What are you talking about... Olbermann makes O'reilly look pale in comparison.

Heck he even makes John Stewart seem smart. Nah I cannot go that far. John Stewart is an idiot. Hence why he has 18 year old kids watching him..

I assume you are basing part of the rationale on the idea that being a benevolent slave owner somehow makes one not really a slave owner. It's mind boggling really.
