I think it's funny since they're both into pushing abstinence as the education of choice for teens. That's been proven to work, I'm sure. I mean, why else would they be so adamant about it? :o

But Obama also made a statement saying that Palin's family is off limits, which I thought was a nice gesture. But just a gesture since I'm sure the media's foaming at the bits over this.

Yeah - its not that abstinence is wrong per se its that its often a pretext for cutting funding to sex-ed classes. I don't really buy the ideological arguments behind it - they're pretty flawed.

I could care less as well however you cannot talk abstinence as the education of choice for teens when your own teen is pregnant, its kinda like "where were you while your teen was sleeping around?" Its kinda hypicritical if you ask me. I mean ppl are going to question what morals she has taught her own kids.

It is not hypoctitical. You can teach and teach and teach, but you simply cannot be with your children 24hrs. each day.... They can and will still exercise there own free will, and will make there own choices (sometimes even bad ones) .......

YMMV

I think especially since her daughter is a teenager, she can't be held responsible for the daughter's pregnancy. And the argument that abstinence is best is not a reason someone is careless enough not to use any protection. Many people out there know full well how NOT to get pregnant and get pregnant anyway. Whether better Sex Ed would help or not is not clear to me. People I know who got pregnant young knew how not to get pregnant but acted careless in that moment anyway. It's not like they said "Oh, I had no idea how not to get pregnant, no one told me". They had sex ed classes too. Maybe some very young naive teens or teens cut off from the world don't know how to avoid pregnancy. The rest I'd say know how but sometimes don't care or take the time to avoid pregnancy in the "heat of the moment". A lot of people aren't as ignorant as some make it sound.

Education (and Abstinence IS a form of sex-education) is surely the key to avoiding/mitigating teenage pregnancies, with the other stuff being the practical aspect of it (i.e. if you are going to do it - then at least do this). Nothing is fool-proof of course. And you can't control how people act on the advice, or indeed if they act on it at all. However... NOT providing teens with the information they need to make informed decisions on their own is just irresponsible.

That said - I don't really see the daughter's pregnany being an example of the mother's hypocrisy - I think most people realise that kids aren't brought up according to some explicit textbook of values and that whatever happens to a teen doesn't automatically become the fault of the parent.

The problem with teaching abstinence as a form of sex-ed is that MANY of the supporters want abstinence ONLY. That's not even practical. Kids are gonna have sex. Sure not all of them but they will. And if you refuse to teach them how to do it safely or how to act in a different scenarios, they're going to do dumb stuff. Because they're kids and they're not know for their decision making skills. And while most kids do know how babies happen, they're not so educated on the disease aspects of sex. Many feel that ####### and oral are ok without condoms cause there's no way to get pregnant from that. And that's not even getting into the countless number of 'old wives tales' that many children believe (you can't get pregnant if you've never had a period).
