Current IRS mileage rate: $0.505

Round trip per day if she drove - $98.98

Let's just say 20 days per month...$1979.60

They are SAVING money this way - if it costs a couple $1000/month : doing the math wouldn't that be $500/person?

But if you're a typical Poconos commuter, that's not what you're comparing it to. You're comparing it to what the bus used to cost you.

simple solution: quit trying to impress your 'friends' by keeping up w/ the Jones. move to a home you can afford. get a vehicle you can afford to own. learn to shop at at walmart. eat your hotdogs & stfu. nobody doing the preceeding feels sorry for them.

I think its more of a case of it probably *was* affordable, and now, not so much. This person might also now be upside down in their mortgage. This is one bleeding heart liberal that recognizes times are changing - adapt or gtfo! Being liberal and understanding that is not mutually exclusive.

Very likely. The increase in energy prices and the mass layoffs in the financial sector in NYC have contributed to a drastic reduction in home prices in the Poconos. It's sad if totally predictable.

i am not familiar with Tobyhanna... but i am familiar with Asley, PA which is not far from Scranton/Wilkesbarre... not many mcmansions there... far cry from it actually... most of the ppl that live there are the kids and grandkids of men who worked the coal mines... living in their family's houses... not exactly a booming economy to save up and move to a MUCH more expensive area to maintain a job... not many jobs available there either

so, i thought i would look up houses for sale in Tobyhanna... there were some really nice homes there, indeed... but, here are a few of the other choices i found:

No NYC commuter lives in any of those homes. They could have afforded POS's like that in the Queens or Jersey. They go to the Poconos for the McMansions only their managers and PMs can afford in Jersey.
