Lawsuit says racial slurs used at O'Reilly

Hispanics are accused of name-calling against blacks

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has sued O'Reilly Auto Parts on behalf of black employees in Houston, alleging that some who work at the company's distribution center were subjected to racial slurs for several years on a routine basis.

The federal suit, filed in Houston last week, alleges the black workers at the warehouse near Hobby Airport were called "blackie" and other derogatory names by their co-workers as well as their supervisors.

The name-calling was done by Hispanic co-workers and managers, said Timothy Bowne, senior trial attorney who is handling the case on behalf of the government.

The employees complained to direct supervisors, but when the comments didn't stop, one wrote a letter to the corporate office in Springfield, Mo., according to Bowne. That letter in 2002, according to the EEOC, didn't end the alleged name-calling.

"As a matter of practice and policy, we don't discuss ongoing litigation," said Jeff Groves, general counsel for O'Reilly Automotive in Springfield. O'Reilly Automotive does business as O'Reilly Auto Parts.

The EEOC also alleges that O'Reilly unlawfully denied promotions to qualified black employees. Most of the promotions went to Hispanics, Bowne said.

The case began when three employees filed charges with the EEOC in the summer of 2006, Bowne said.

Hispanic-Black tensions are not exactly news. They've been around for a while and will frankly only get worse.

Speaking of racial tensions, there have been a spate of home invasions recently in my area - all the descriptions of the perps say they're African American males of 'medium build' and every victim has either been a lone elderly white person or an Indian immigrant female home alone. I'm already hearing all kinds of anti-black sentiment from my Indian neighbors and friends in the area.

The world just goes round and round and we're all just hitching a ride.

Not only is it nothing new nor surprising given the disparate inequalities (= less to spread around for those that lack) in this country, but it is also nothing new to have some segments of the "I don't care about others" community to be exploiting said tragedies in order to seed more discord among the infighting currently plaguing the nation's "groups."
