Some say, ‘It's the economy, stupid.’ People need money now more than ever.

Melissa, who declined to give her last name, admitted the main reason she's donating eggs is because she's struggling financially.

At the Center For Egg Options in Illinois, the number of women donating has increased significantly since April.

A woman who passes the health and psychological screenings can get thousands of dollars in return for her donation.

"The donors will make in the area of $7,000, and the surrogates will make anywhere from $20,000 to $30,000 plus," said Nancy Block, founder of the Center For Egg Options.

In the Valley, Dr. Bruce Shapiro at the Fertility Center of Las Vegas said compensation is closer to $3,000 to $5,000.

But he said he hopes the economy is not the main reason more women are donating.

“We really try to have people who donate for altruistic reasons. That's the best of all worlds. Sometimes you can't be absolutely certain. You can only be certain of what a person tells you,” Shapiro said.

I would never sell my eggs.. no particular reason but I think people who do are doing a good thing because someone women can't have a baby any other way...

personally one of our options we are thinking about doing is taking my egg and hubby's stuff and mixing it together and sticking it in surrogate... but this process is very expensive... so we probably won't be able to do it..

Probably not, but I can't say no for certain. You never know what might happen in the future. Right now, I'm not in a dire situation where I need money.

I would donate eggs or be a surrogate if my sister ever needed it.

That might be easier said though- she loves kids but really doesn't want any of her own.

hubby & i have had discussions about this all the time. I SURE would He is totally uncomfortable with the idea, so for that reason I won't push the idea, but heck.. 10K for a few body parts.. sure would! that would pay off debt pretty quick!
