Footwear at home

Hi All,

I am not a Brazilian but I am now having a Brazilian guest in our home. He wears his shoes and sandals all the time inside the house. Is that what most Brazilians do back home? I just don't get used to seeing it.

Do they wear same sandals that they also wear outside, when they are inside the house? Will they get offended if I tell em to take off the sandals inside the house?

This is sooo common in Latin American countries too! My grandma and my mom used to say that to me all the time when were kids and walked barefoot inside the house! And of course, the more they told us not to, the more we did it! LOL Even until this day I think my mom would still yell at me if I do this.

I don't think he will be offended. I don't mind taking my shoes off when I visit my fiance's family in the U.S. and normally, I'd never take my shoes when in my own house or when visiting friends in my country.

I get grossed out when people have no shoes on. Big time. I guess it might be a cultural thing, I agree with the above posters. When we lived in Canada I would carry house slippers with me anywhere... I was not about to walk barefoot in anyone's house... eeeeewwww

As for how to deal with your guests, it's really up to you and what you consider proper guest-hosting. Have a fun event!!!

Perhaps you could go to one of those Chinese import stores and buy funny cheap sandals for everyone?

LOL I talked to my guest. He just happened not to know. LOL. I just feel bad cuz I have mopped the kitchen floor and all carpets have already been cleaned.

My husband never wears sandals/shoes at home - thank God because we have white carpets.

I know in Colombia they keep their shoes on or wear sandals mainly because the floor is tile, the windows are open all day long and dirt gets on it all the time. So of course, walking barefoot will leave your feet really dirty. I have a tendency to walk with only socks on and my mom used to get so mad at me for doing that in Colombia since dirty white socks are a pain to keep clean.

My husband would not get offended if he had another pair to put on. Here, in the US, he has lots of flip flops (he calls them slippers) and he has a pair of what I call slippers for indoors. He has a mat at the back door to put dirty shoes on.

In Jamaica, he had few pairs of shoes and may have been upset if you told him to take them off.

Brazilians don't have a rule when it comes to that like certain cultures have. it really depends on the person. I don't wear shoes in the house because I don't feel comfortable. I either am barefoot or wearing flip flops.

If you have a problem with people wearing shoes in your house you should tell your guest that it's not acceptable to wear shoes inside the house. I'm sure he'll understand. I've known people that in any circumstance wear or let other people wear shoes in the house. You can make that a rule.

My husband and I do it...and my mother-in-law...and most people I know. I'm American and they are Peruvian.
