What if someone stood up in Scarborough ( UK)and said he are going to make this a Vindaloo City?

IK HOU VAN JOU, MARK

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

Nagin's-it's inciteful and racist

Nagin is a racist. That's hardly a secret at this point.

He even openly had a problem with all the Hispanics who were moving into NOLA to work the rebuilding effort.

He may be - I'm not familiar enough with the man to say one way or the other. If he is racist - I don't think that "chocolate city" statement is a particularly good example of it.

What do you understand "chocolate city" to mean then? What if someone stood up in Scarborough ( UK)and said he are going to make this a Vindaloo City?

Well that would require changing the context somewhat - as I said New Orleans has/had a specific historical character that has a lot to do with the ethnic makeup of the people who lived there over a 150+ year period.

To say that you don't want the city to lose this character is not the same as going into a city without any such background and suggesting that you want to establish a specific ethnic character where none previously existed - presumably to the detriment of the people already living there.

The celebrity outrage was also absent during the SoCal fires last year when almost as many people died and as much property was destroyed, even though, you know, celebrities were actually affected by it, but I don't believe similar emails went out at the behest of right wing talk show hosts demanding outrage. In fact, I think a few of them thought it was actually funny.

Well there was 13 dead in the midwest floods compared to 1500+ in Katrina.

I think this thread focuses more on those left behind after the disasters.

We also tend to evacuate when we are told to evacuate in the midwest.

F##k Iowa and the Midwest....it is such a boring place of famers and cornfed women...who wants to do a benefit for those backward white peckerheads.... :pop:

uh, thanx, nice to know I'm not included in your summation  .

Almaty lives in the midwest.

so do I

 it was a joke...hehehe

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Interesting topic and one I never really thought of even though I live very near the disaster areas.

Maybe one reason the midwest takes it in stride is because this is not the first time, nor the last time we will flood. Ironically, when I think back to the worst flooding I can remember, we still didn't have the celebrities or the president come tour or anything. The cities of Missouri banded together to help one another in sand bagging, rescuing, moving whole towns, and opening their homes in order to help one another. FEMA stepped in at the end.

And, no, I never hear of any rioting or looting and I hear very little complaining about any of it.

There's no outrage because a vast majority of the people in the midwest have taken responsibility upon themselves. They know that nobody can control the rain. They take what measures they can to prevent flooding based on what money's available. Sometimes it's not enough. Does anything get done when you sit on your a$$ complaining, waiting for someone else to take care of your problems. Most Midwesterners know that this absolutely NEVER works. Personal accountability is a midwestern value.

In other parts of the country though, people have more of a victim mentality that's been instilled into them...it's always someone else's fault...i.e. it's the government's fault this natural disaster happened and I'm going to sit here until they fix everything. And while the government and volunteers who take off work and come in from other parts of the country flow in to help, I think I'll keep complaining. Hell, maybe I'll even do some looting. That'll make me feel better about the government screwing me over like they just did by allowing this natural disaster to happen.
