Hmmm... I don't think it can be denied that there is a criminal element among the illegal immigrant population. As to what extent crimes committed by illegal immigrant affect the national crime rate - I suppose that's an open question...

Well yes - that's a given. But I don't think we should be in the practice of relativizing these things.

Shouldn't we? The way I read in Mono28's sarcastic comment, was that illegal immigrants are not the main reason for most of the crimes happening in the US.(I agree with her by the way.) Your statement mentioned the existence of a criminal element among the illegal immigrant population, but did not mention the very same among the rest of the population.

I think the open question you pose cannot be comprehensively answered unless there is a parallel study to show how the crime of the legal and native-born Americans affects the national crime rate.

Well as I said - the illegal immigrant population is a relatively low percentage of the total US population. As such the effect of that population's criminal element on the national crime rate can only be limited. What I would argue however is that the issue of interest is not about the quantitative makeup of the national crime rate (i.e. how many much of the total crime rate is committed by group A, rather than Group B) but rather the proportion of criminals within a given population.

While it isn't fair to make judgements about individuals - it is accurate to suggest that large groups of people coming into the country avoiding the process of immigration background screening are doing so either because they can't afford to do it the legal way, or because they wouldn't be eligible for a visa in the first place. That this may be because of past criminal histories can't be ignored.

I agree, but believe that the %-age of those who are without papers because of w/ past criminal histories is small enough to not make a difference in the the national crime rate.

On the national scale that might be true - but I think its more of a problem at the local level. Specifically there are issues of population density to take into account that may make crimes more prevalent within certain neighbourhoods or cities. We already know that there is is a substantial correlation between areas of high crime (specifically violent crime or that related to the drug trade) and areas of high poverty. Its also been established in the US census, for example, that if you're black or hispanic you're more likely to experience poverty. Its therefore no coincidence that many predominantly black or hispanic neighbourhoods tend to experience high crime rates.

they are illegal, they dont pay taxes, they use our tax dollars...the liberals have to make sure everyone is taken care of(fed, clothed, a roof over thier head and free medical)all paid for by tax paying working class. with out the illegals working maybe we could get the welfare recipients working (I guess we would have to make sure it was required in order to receive benifits). as it is now the laziest of the population get food stamps and check and sit on their butts. teen agers getting pregnant just to get the check and the kids raise themselves half the time like wild animals while the mothers uses drugs.

Agreed. I have to say that subscribing to stereotypes about "liberals" and "the poor" probably doesn't add a lot to the discussion, though it is typical of a lot of political discourse in this country.

They pay taxes like everyone else. Actually I know more USC that work for cash than illegals and they don't pay taxes. The illegals using fake SSN pay taxes with no hope of getting refunds and the pay SSI with no way ok collecting when they get old.

I thought I'd just add that I was 19, pregnant, got WIC and Medicaid.

Then I finished college, got a master's degree, and now I pay for health insurance, etc.

As well, when I was 19 and pregnant and receiving aforementioned benefits, I also worked and went to college and *gasp* paid taxes.

Does that make me a bad person?

PS I'm not a snob, but the bottom line is that I wouldn't do migrant farm work or work in a chicken factory or a meat packing place or whatever. And I lived in Redneckville, Louisiana and I don't know many people who would do the jobs that many illegal (or legal) immigrants do. So the whole "they took our jobs wah wah wah" cry is a bunch of BS to me.
