Need some help guys. My wifes Green Card came in last week. We had requested that her card be made with my last name which the officer was nice enough to do so. Besides the application, what all do we need to take with us as proof to get her name legally changed at the Social Security Office?

Proof of Previous Las Name:

EAD Card

Drivers License

Passport

Proof of New Last Name:

Marriage Certificate

Green Card

I think you just need a marriage certificate really. Make sure to get that DHS stamp removed if it's on her SS Card.

If you have been married for a while and she never used your name, she might need to do an official name change at the courthouse.

You need to look into that.

Removal of Conditions on 07-19-10

In this tedious process, we tend to forget that this is all worth it.

You need to provide them the official document that facillitates the change of name.... In most states that is the marriage certificate...

It generally works that they require it translated to English by a court translator. I think that's how it should work here too.

The marriage was held in the state of Virginia

I believe all that required in VA is a marriage Certificate.

What is this DHS stamp that was mentioned?

We got a 2 year conditional green card.

If your wife received her SSN before greencard it has a "disclaimer" printed on it indicating valid for work only with DHS authorization. Once greencard is received this disclaimer is removed.

We just did this same thing last Friday in TX, very easy and painless...took 2 minutes after a 10 minute wait. We took:

-Her original SS card that was sent in her maiden name

-Our original marriage certificate

-Her passport with I-94 (no green card yet, just filed AOS)

-Certified copy of her birth certificate

They asked to see all of this in our office.
