Could Michigan turn red in '08?

Pundits riff on Obama's attention to state

By TODD SPANGLER • FREE PRESS WASHINGTON STAFF • June 16, 2008

WASHINGTON – NBC’S political team weighs in this morning with its take on why Barack Obama is making another trip to Michigan today – his third in recent weeks.

On NBC’s “First Read” the networks pundits note Michigan is now “the first battleground state he’s returning to since he began to act like the presumptive nominee.

“The reason: Given the fact that he didn't really campaign in the state due to the primary calendar mess -- as well as the political mess in Detroit -- Michigan is one of McCain's best chances to turn a blue state red.

“Obama has a very realistic path to 270 that doesn't include Ohio AND Florida, but he doesn't have a realistic path if he somehow loses Ohio, Florida, AND Michigan.”

The First Read piece also includes a link to the Michigan Republican Party’s new ad targeting Obama for staying out of the state during the primary season and criticizing automakers.

Considering Michigan barely went blue in 00 and 04 it's entirely possible
Especially if a lot of Democrat voters leave the state (this is one of the states where the population is in serious decline)

Before you pop that cork there, Gary, take note:

Realistically, the best starting point to look at the electoral map is the 2004 contest, a narrow Republican victory but one that today suggests an Obama edge.

Of the bigger prizes, Obama eyes two red states, Ohio and Florida, and McCain has his sights on two blue ones, Pennsylvania and Michigan. Pennsylvania, with its progressive suburbs, leans to Obama and Florida still looks better for McCain. The other two are tossups.

Obama has changed the dynamics in medium-size and smaller states from four years ago. There are more than half a dozen 2004 red states -- Iowa, Colorado, New Mexico, Virginia, Nevada, Missouri, even Indiana and Montana -- where Obama is competitive. There are very few -- New Hampshire and Wisconsin -- that McCain can turn from Democrat to Republican.

How has which Democrat Congress ruined the economy and auto industry of Michigan?

Globalization and high gas prices are what killed the auto industry. Neither of which the Democrats are particularly responsible for (Except the Democrats who voted for the Iraq war).

Democrats promised a plan for high gas prices within 2 years. Yet to occur Dan.

Also raised the CAFE mpg standards overnight on automakers thus making them cut jobs, layoff and close plants overnight. Go tell this to the autoworkers, they know who did this to them.

The same companies that produce cars for the US market, also produce cars in Europe, which already has higher mileage standards. They just didn't do it in the US, as there was no reason too.

Many plants were closed to be moved to Mexico.

Its all about profit.

US automakers close factories not because of unreasonable fuel efficiency standards but because there isn't sufficient demand for their gas guzzling low quality products. Fuel efficiency is something the consumer demands in a time of high gas prices. Other automakers learned that lesson in Europe and elsewhere where high gas prices have been a reality of life for a very long time and the US automakers - although competing with fuel efficient vehicles in those markets - did not. That's not the fault of the Democrats in Congress by any stretch of the imagination.

And if anyone ran on a platform to battle high oil and gas prioces, it was your boy W who felt the $1.50 or less a gallon we were paying back in the late 90's were unacceptable. He's had 7 years, 5 of them with an all Republican Congress to deliver on that. And I guess he did. Oil and gas prices are much more acceptable now. Not the Joe Average but to his oil buddies. Gas prices haven't gone anywhere but up under Republican leadership. And I'm not saying it's all their fault but to point fingers at the Democratic Congress when it comes to the pain at the pump is utterly ridiculous and shows how little you know.
