and how many have killed drunk driving a car that they have a license to drive, when u apply for a license the background goes back to ck if you have violent tendencies crimes you wont get, if its found you are on certain medicines you wont get, that license wether for a car or gun will not stop anyone. The right to have these guns go wayyyyyyyyy back before us in our history, not so other countries.

"Gun laws should be more strict"...

No... Gun toting grandmothers need to be more diligent. She is 100% at fault.

If the gun laws were more strict, the grandmother wouldn't have a gun in her bag in which the child would still be alive.

Guns don't solve the problem in the USA being a safer place.

more strict how? is there something constructive you can expand on or is this just a rant?

No, not a rant at all. Just my thoughts on gun law :) Take it you own a gun or 2.

As LuckyStrike would probably say, I blame the gun.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

The gun is not evil any more than the knife, car or any object its the people that are evil. I work at the agency that issues gun permits in Okla. and a BIG majority are elder and yes sometimes when u see them you will say ohhhhh no way to old, but they do have to go to training to get it and i guess to pass the course you will need some understanding and reality. Even with the gun laws the very bad crooks will still have the guns i dont think they are going to stop and say oh i better go get my permit first. Here we have drive by shooting seems like every day lately those involved mostly older teens and into the 20's. I dont know what else could be done, the grandma was thinking of protection when she goes to her car, to the store etc, its a sad situation.

And how many people are killed each year by guns getting into the wrong hands, intoxicated, angry or depressed?

Among the world's 36 richest nations, The United States has by far the highest rate of gun deaths -- murders, suicides and accidents.

I just want to say that the last time I worked jury duty (thank God I'm cleared for six years) it was an attempted murder case. The weapon of choice was a garbage can. And let me tell you, he almost killed that guy with the garbage can. We can't outlaw all inanimate objects. The people are the problem and they will achieve their goal with anything they can.

Outlawing objects also fail to eliminate them. Actually, in the past it seems to have made them more prevalent cause now they have a stigma attached to them and that attracts people. Outlawing guns won't eliminate them, it'll just create another law that there aren't enough police to enforce.

so what laws would you prefer to see in place? and i take it you don't own a gun ;)

As LuckyStrike would probably say, I blame the gun.

And if there wasn't a gun, there wouldn't be anything to blame.

that's rather simplistic isn't it?

if the kid didn't exist, this never would have happened either.

If Charles owns a gun, maybe we should review the laws? I didn't realize how bad it had gotten since I moved to the suburbs.

I completely agree with that.

My husband was near brainwashed to believe guns were near the root of all evil to the point where I think my MIL would be more relieved to know that he had joined a suicide cult rather than have shot a 12 gauge about a month ago. At first, he was really skeptical of the whole thing, but after exposure has since softened his stance on the issue of completely banning all guns period. Ignorance is a shame on all sides of the issue. If the grandmother had half a brain, she would not have brought a friggin handgun to go shopping at Sam's Club with their grandchild in the first place, let alone all the other stupid things that had to have happened to lead to this result? Who does that? If she had been going to some dark atm alone at 3am, she might have more of a case, but really, Sam's Club??

The Americans value their constitution and the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment deals with the right to bear arms. Here is the price that ordinary Americans are paying for the privilege

- 8 children a day die in murders, suicides and accidents involving guns

- since John F. Kennedy was assinated more Americans have died from gunshot wounds at home than died in all the wars of the 20th century

- Osama bin Laden would need at least nine twin towers like attacks each year to equal what Americans do to themselves every year with guns.

- Murder rates in LA, NY and Chigago were approaching the hightest in the world (30 per 100,000) until moves were made in late 20th century to restrict access to guns to teenagers. (The NRA wants these moves reversed)

If Osama bin Laden had had more sense, instead of launching a terrorist attack, he would simply have provided financial backing to the NRA.

A woman is like a tea bag- you never know how strong she is until she gets in hot water.

Hence, why we should have stronger breeding laws.

But, to address Mel Gibson's (oops! Willy Wallace) totally stupid and insane use of flawed inductive reasoning... No Gun =/= No accident involving stupid kid. Perhaps granny had a knife, or a nail file, or can of tomato paste instead. Any one of these items, in the hands of a sub-moronic child (as evidenced in this case), could have caused just as much damage and possibly worse.

Your use of logic is flawed. I suggest you refrain from trying again until you've mastered the laws of causality.

while it's a tragedy, i agree with kazan. specifically, the grandmother can carry a concealed weapon in her purse. however, it seems the purse was not zipped up nor was the gun in a holster. i cannot fathom why anyone would put a gun in a purse where it would be banged up by the contents in the purse.

I don't completely disagree with the idea she can either. The problem for me is whether or not the circumstances really warranted carrying a concealed weapon loose in your purse in the first place.
