I don't get it. we went to the bank twice and the lady said it's (SSN) not in the system. Is there a delay. We got the SSN through EAD in the mail. (5/17) Help!!!!!!

Long time ago, i opened a bank account without a SSN. I don't understand how the lack of SSN is an issue.

Tell the lady you want to talk to her supervisor and will come back later to get the SSN added to your account.

The reason it is not showing up her in her system might be a timing issue between the SSA and their updates process. If your SSN doesn't show up in couple of weeks, just show up to an SSA office.

If you already have a SS# and the bank is saying that is not in the system, then you need to call or go to the SSA office to find out what is going on. Our bank also asked for my husband's SS# when we opened our joint account but we already had that info from the SSA.

The banks use a flat database to confirm that the SSN is valid or not, SSA updates this database monthly.

SSA maintains a High-Group list if the card's number is higher than the list then the bank will consider it invalid until it is on the list.

Example, looking at the high group list, if your SSN starts with 062 and second 2 numbers are higher than 96, then the bank will have a problem, they will think it is invalid until next month's list.

It is strange... because we opened our joint bank account 2 days after I received SSN....

I guess it depends on the bank.. Right after my wife and I married, we went down to my bank (Bank Atlantic) and I was able to turn my primary checking account into a joint checking account and my wife didn't even have a SSN. There was a special form she had to fill out and they wanted a letter from me stating we live together at this address, but that was it. I actually used an updated statement as evidence in our AOS packet from that account.

The bank did ask that when she does have her SSN, that we come back in and update the information.

Excellent! I can see it's up to 96 she is a 98. I signed up for the updates. So I'll know ASAP when it changes for sure next month. Thank you all for the answers.

We have the same issue when i tried to add my wife to my Chase acct. Then banker said that the SSN# wasn't showing up in their database....so we told her that the SSN was only issued 7 days earlier. I was still able to add her to the account: the banker took her SSN Card, photo copied it and did some other processing (what i dont know). I had the same problem with my other Account too.

It took us roughly 3 weeks after getting Andre's social security number for the bank to verify. The verificiation system lags behind a bit.

Don't bother going back to SSA. They will just say it's fine in their system and it's the bank's problem.
