I just got my work permit and Social.

I live in NY State and the laws to get a drivers license lengthly. Its going to take me over a month to get a license.

Is it legal to go to another state where my parents live get a license there, where you just do the written test and the road test and get the license on the same day?

I lived with my parents and I sort of have my stuff there so thats my home too.

I just didnt wish the process here would take so long.

Thanks

Driver's licenses are only issued to permanent residents of the state.

So if you live in NY you cannot get a license from another state.

You can only have one place of residence.

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

Is now a US Citizen immigration completed Jan 12, 2012.

Do you have one from Brazil? You would have to double check this (maybe different in NY), but I'm almost positive you can drive on your foreign license for up to 6 months.

Long story short, we have a complicated case. We've been at this for nearly 5 years. You can read our story here. I highly recommend our attorney Laurel Scott, as well as attorneys Laura Fernandez and Lizz Cannon .

Filed I-130 via CSC in Feb 2008. Petition approved June 2008. Consular interview in Mexico, Oct 2008, visa denied, INA 212a6cii. We allege improper application of the law in this case.

2012, started over in Seoul: I-130 filed DCF on 7/2, I-130 approved 8/8, Medical at Yonsei Severance 11/20, IR1 appointment in November 2012.

CRBA filed 1-3-13 at Seoul for our daughter

Good luck, I've failed the driving test three times in NYC

You'll need to show proof of residency to take the test in another state.

If you've got proof of residency in New Jersey you could take it there and then transfer it back to NY. Proof of residency in the form of a utility bill or something like that.

That's what I did. I had a telephone bill in my name at my mother's house in GA. Took the test there and the "road" test, which was in a parking lot set up with cones. Then transferred it to NY without a problem. It's doable.

Yes, you could do it if you have some sort of proof of residency from another state. Although, NJ has gotten a little tough on proving residency.

But here is my question, regarding NY driving test:

Does anyone know if they offer it in other languages, i.e., Arabic, for one?

New Jersey offers it in a whole slew of languages...or they'll find you a translator!! But i can't find anything on the NYS website that says as much.

Thanks!

i know the permit (written) test is offered in many many languages, im sure that since albanian is one of them, arabic is definitely another one (arabic is a MUCH more common language than albanian)...i also know that for the 5 hour class (required to take the actual road test), you can call up driving schools in your area to find out which ones will allow an interpreter to accompany the student...i found one in brooklyn, i am sure there are many more around nyc...as far as the actual driving test, i am not sure how it works with the interpreter (we haven't gotten that far lol), but im sure that they can help you in some way, but you may have to go to the dmv to find out the answer to that question, im not entirely sure

Thanks BabyBlue!

Yes, that helps.

I'm not really worried about the actual test, or even the 5-hour class... i think he'd get by on English okay, but the written is a different story!

i feel better now, thanks!

So your hubbie already got his permit?
