Don't know if anyone's in the same boat here...I filed my tax return jointly with the wifey at the beginning of February. Not knowing we would be ineligible for the stimulus rebate, I filed it using an ITIN for her. I realized at the end of April that we needed to file with a SS# for both of us to be eligible for the rebate payment. By then, she had her SS# and I immediately filed an amended return, changing only the ITIN to her SS# on the return. I haven't had any success reaching anyone who knows what they're talking about at the IRS. So I figured I'd give the trusty VJ crowd a shot...so my question is, does anybody know about how long it will take to get the rebate payment?

I don't know but we had to file an amended return as well for a different reason and are still waiting for our rebate. Good luck - hope it comes soon.

I know that people who were not eligible for the Stimulus payment this year due to ITN/SSN problems can get the rebate next year.

The IRS people have told me that, so I guess worst case is that I'll have to wait until next year. No problem there, if that's what we're stuck with. But the people I've talked to at the IRS seem to think that I can still get it this year with the amended return. I've called three different times hoping for a more definitive answer, but every time they give me a half-hearted response - something like...."um, yeah, you should be able to file an amended return and get it this year". When I ask how long it will take, none of them seem to have any idea.

We're doing some remodeling, so I'm just trying to give Erika a little extra money to play with. I figure the return on investment would be well worth it. ;)

When i first filed my taxes, Kamal did not have his ssn. So we filed HOH. Then in Febuary we got his ssn, and filed married filing jointly, amended our return and waited. We got our amended return last month, and were told we were eligible for 600 for our stimulus. We got a notice that wasn't really explaining things to well but we got our stimulus today of only 300.

Shouldn't you be eligible for $1200? I had always understood that married couples filing jointly got a total of $1200 + $300/child up to a certain amount of children. Is $600 taken away if the spouse is not a permanent resident? Sounds like they're cheating you, Terrie. Erika's not a permanent resident yet, so that makes me wonder if we won't get her $600.

But your post did answer the question as to about how long I should expect to wait. Thanks

We were only eligible for 600 not 1200. But we still can't figure out why they reduced it to 300. I think it sucks because as usual i got screwed by the goverment once again. And it didn't feel good!!:angry:

per the IRS:

Q. I received my stimulus payment, but it was less than what my friends and neighbors received. Why?

A. Your economic stimulus payment is based on information provided on your 2007 income tax return.

Many but not all taxpayers qualify for the maximum basic payment of $600 for singles or $1,200 for married couples. Many parents are also receiving an additional $300 for each qualifying child, born after Dec. 31, 1990.

Your payment may be less than the maximum for one or more of the following reasons:

You are single and your net income tax liability is less than $600. If you file Form 1040 net income tax liability is the amount shown on Line 57, plus the amount on Line 52.

You are married and your net income tax liability is less than $1,200.

You are single and your adjusted gross income (AGI) is more than $75,000. On Form 1040, AGI is the amount on Line 37.

You are married filing a joint return and your AGI is more than $150,000.

You owe back taxes that reduced your payment.

You have non-tax federal debts such as unpaid student loans or child-support obligations that reduced your payment.

Around the time you receive your payment, you will also receive a notice from the IRS explaining how your payment was calculated. It is important to keep this notice as a record of your economic stimulus payment.

I would imagine this applies to emended returns:

Q. I filed after April 15 and the payment date for my Social Security number has passed. How long will it take for me to get my stimulus payment?

A. It will generally take a minimum of six weeks after you file your return to get your stimulus payment

and just found this on the IRS website:

Q. If I currently have an ITIN and file my return but later this year get an SSN, can I amend my return to get the payment or will I need to wait until I file my 2008 return to claim it?

A. You will need to wait until you file your 2008 income tax return to claim the economic stimulus payment. [New 4/14/08]
