WASHINGTON - Veterans Affairs Secretary James Peake Thursday dressed down a staffer who advised blocking vets from receiving posttraumatic stress disorder treatment in order to save money.

"The employee has been counseled and is extremely apologetic," said Peake, a doctor and Silver Star veteran of the Vietnam War.

Peake put out the statement after the VoteVets.org advocacy group and the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington ferreted out an e-mail by the unidentified staffer to VA psychologists, social workers and a psychiatrist.

"Given that we have more and more compensation-seeking veterans, I'd like to suggest that you refrain from giving a diagnosis of PTSD straight out," the e-mail said.

"Additionally, we don't ... have time to do the extensive testing that should be done to determine PTSD," the e-mail added.

Jon Soltz, an Army Iraq war vet and head of VoteVets.org, said, "Many veterans believe that the government just doesn't want to pay out the disability that comes along with a PTSD diagnosis, and this revelation will not allay their concerns."

A recent RAND report said that as many as 300,000 Iraq and Afghanistan vets could be suffering major depression, or post traumatic stress.

The VA. Period.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

I'll tell you what Dean, if Obama wins I will post every bad thing that happens under him with the comment "Another fukcup under the Obama Admin". You will see how big a load of BS the constant stream of comments like that really are.

lol...but it is true brother gary,.

my dad..brother and me all have the ability to use the VA....i don't but my dad and brother do..services cut//8 dead in marion VA in their area by a doctor, who should not have been pracricing..

.and the staff tells you straight, that the budget gets cut yearly, while medical care cost rise...no bullsh!t, i hope you never have a family member depending on them...

I don't know what to make of this one. It may just be an idiot trying to get cheese points. I've only used the VA a few times and never had a problem. It's been a while though.

In reality both my brothers are retired Navy. Neither if them has had a problem yet.

My point is this Dean, Bush isn't responsible for every bone head that works under him. PTSD is a valid claim and alway will be. This guy is an idiot and his suggestion was immediately shot down the minute it was discovered. This isn't a issue that you can shoot at Bush for.

My point is this Dean, Bush isn't responsible for every bone head that works under him. PTSD is a valid claim and alway will be. This guy is an idiot and his suggestion was immediately shot down the minute it was discovered. This isn't a issue that you can shoot at Bush for.

i think you make a valid point..the VA was screwed up under clinton and others....but with the iraq war and more services needed it came to light more..as service demand ahs increased
