OK, guys, I got home about 45 minutes ago and it all went fine. I had to wait 45 minutes until the hygenist even took Xrays which didn't help my anxiety but oh well. The worst part was the injections - the first one from the front wasn't bad - he went very slowly so the pain was minimal. The second(palate side) was worse like I expected but still not horrific, maybe a 3-4 out of 10. The procedure itself was basically painless - it felt like he was hammering on the tooth and I felt pressure but I didn't even feel and pulling or cutting. I was surprised when he said it was pulled. He then stitched it up and it felt a little strange but not really painful either. It does hurt a little now but I am taking the prescribed pain meds and it gives me an excuse to eat ice cream. lol...

Thanks for your helpful advice. (F) I wont be so scared next time.

Yes, they told me no straws - too bad, I wanted to reward myself with a Frappuccino on the way home... Maybe when it''s healed up a little more.

Yup. No straws, smoking (if you do smoke) or eating food that crumbles or is sharp (like chips). All of those could cause damage or help produce a dry socket.

I don't know why but I've heard that the dry sockets happen more often on the bottom teeth than the top ones

I'd have to imagine that's because it's easier for small bits of food to get trapped in the open sockets on the lower jaw than the sockets in the upper jaw. I don't know for sure, though. That just seems to make the most sense.

pardon my poor knowledge, but what is a "dry socket"?

I was advised to eat mostly soft foods the first 2 days - soup, mashed potatoes, yogurt, pudding, ice cream, etc. No rice - I guess because it gets caught between the teeth and could end up in the socket? No dal or other beans either I would imagine.

Im glad everything came out ok. No pun intended.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

a week after I had my top wisdom teeth pulled I ate chinese food and a piece of rice got stuck in the indentation in my gum. took me like 10 minutes to get it out with my tongue
