Buying a computer

I mentioned in the Say Anything thread yesterday I was going to buy a new computer. I got some good suggestions there but was wondering if there were anymore. I had originally thought we'd just get a new desktop but I've been told I should go with a laptop. I've never had a laptop before and never really liked them that much. I would enjoy being able to take it with us when we travel though. I was hoping I could get something without Vista but it seems that might be a little difficult. Any suggestions anyone has are great. I am pretty good with computers when it comes to working with them but just about clueless when it comes to selecting the best one to purchase.

Just couldn't stay my @ss away!

i don't care for laptops. dang keys are too small. unless you really plan on using it while traveling, a desktop is better and cheaper.

See that's kinda why I don't really like them. I always have trouble hitting the right keys. It's like they are too cramped in there or something. We do travel quite a bit and it would be nice to have a computer when we travel. I'm not really sure we'd use it though. We're usually pretty busy when we vacation. I think we might be some of the only people that do more on vacation than when they are at home. I usually need a vacation from my vacation.

problem with travel is it's also a key item for thieves. save the money and go to an internet cafe instead. less to lug around too.

id deffinatly stay away from laptops unless you plan to do alot of traveling. Desktops are cheaper, also, parts can be replaced in desktops where they can not in laptops.

Ok, so I think you all have convinced me to stick with a desktop. I didn't really need much convincing. Now that we've decided on that, what should I look for in a good desktop. I usually just buy my computers at Walmart. If I could fine a good computer somewhere else for a little more money I wouldn't mind paying. I just want the best computer I can get for the price range I'm looking at. I would like to stay in the range of $500-$800.

I have a laptop and desktop but use my desktop all the time, or attach a normal keyboard and mouse to the laptop which defeats the point somewhat lol.

The desktop is hp pavilion quad core and its a great machine, very fast, just hope it works when i bring it to the usa.

You can still get XP operating systems on new machine but you need to bear in mind that Microsoft will stop supporting it sometime soon.

I think my biggest problem is I'm not sure what amount of memory or what kind of processor is good. I also know nothing about video cards or sound cards. Once I get a computer I can do just about anything with it. I just have no idea what to look for when I'm buying.

Are you a gamer (WoW, FPS etc)?

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

No, we pretty much just use it for basic stuff. Javier does have his own business so we have a program on our current computer to do invoices, estimates, and run reports. Other than that we just use it for internet and maybe some word processing now and then. We do watch movies on it from time to time.

That's what I was wondering. I've seen from the threads on here that it tends to slow things down. There's not much I hate more than a slow computer. I just don't have the patience when it comes to waiting on things to load. Plus, it seems like I might as well go with Vista. No sense in getting XP when it's eventually going to be phased out anyway.
