general question about SSN

Hi everyone,

When is the best time for me to apply for a SSN here in US. I will get married this thursday and will proceed with the AOS then SSN or SSN then AOS

Most say its best to wait for 2 weeks after entry to usa before applying for ssn card.

Within 76 days of entry to the USA on a K-1 visa. Easiest time to do this is about 2 weeks after entry and before marriage.

Note: K-1 is not a work visa, it is a fiancee visa for entry to the USA and marriage, K-1 is "Work Auth" primarily to be able to get the SSN, some states are strict in their interpretation of a federal law that requires persons applying for a "license" to have SSN, this can cause a problem with marriage license if only one person has SSN and the other (the K-1 holder) does not.

You can apply for SSN anytime after entry and up to day 76 when arriving on K-1.

Many will say wait two weeks...

Many will say apply in your current legal name (not your married name if you decide to change it)

I'd say at least after 2 weeks of arrival (but not later than 76 days after arrival just like fwaguy and YuandDan said) so that DHS has recorded your entry here in US. And it seems like it is a lot easier applying for SSN when you're not married yet and then go back and change your name after married. You can also do AOS without SSN or get SSN before AOS.

I didn't apply for my SSN until after we were married so that I wouldn't have to change my name later to my married name.

I arrived in the US on July 31/04, got married August 28/04 and applied for my SSN on August 30/04 (I took our marriage certificate which I had obtained that day from the Court house).

My SSA card arrived with my married name on it and I didn't have to go back to change it later. One stop, one card.
