Don't get me wrong, I like the music she made in the 80s and 90s (and some of it now), but her cultural tourism is a little gag-me.

Alexandra, it's called lack of intercultural competence, alas denial stage in the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity by Milton & Janet Bennett. if you don't know what you're talking about, please STFU ;)

I :luv: youuuuuuuuuu

Now let's all sing.... HOLIDAY!!! CELEBRATE!!!!

OH, I'm sorry, I bow in deference to your knowledge. ;)

Please enjoy this video, where Madonna pretends the members of Gogol Bordello are actually Gypsies and sings in the Romani language while simultaneously essentializing an entire culture, IMO:

I'm just a wee journalist. Getting a master's in journalism. Not very academic. I'll probably go back for another master's in something specific so I can have a niche in the shrinking journalism market.

edited to add the actual point of the post, before I got carried away thinking about my job prospects: I am doing a lot of writing about Gypsies and how Americans/Westerners use their culture for profit, including for my thesis, and I'm getting all defensive of Gypsies/Roma. I can't help it now.

Holy Molly. Now I am seriously impressed -send me an email with more about your graduate work, I'm always in for intelligent reading. And here I am, thinking you're just a bimbo. Bad me, bad me ;)

Back to singing: DON'T GO FOR THE SECOND BEST BABY, PUT YOUR LOVE TO THE TEST .....

The things Madonna has said about Gypsies lately make me want to vormit, as a great VJ poster once said.

such as?

After talking about serious issues facing the Roma people, at a recent press conference about her new film, she said, "I think, secretly, I want to be a Gypsy. I love the idea of traveling round and playing music and letting life unfold in a spontaneous way."

This is akin to saying something like, "I think secretly, I want to be a n----r. I love the idea of playing the blues, eating the freshest watermelon, and having mystical powers."

It shows racism and ignorance and a desire to keep believing in outdated stereotypes.

Doesn't she also affect an English accent these days?

I don't think too many people will disagree that she's a talented (and very successful) singer/songwriter, but I don't think she will get too many calls to conduct lectures on international politics or cultural issues. Its not so much being qualified to talk about these things - but its clear when someone doesn't have the slightest idea of what they're talking about. She can sing a song - she can't cure cancer.

True, but you've got to be careful with what you say when you're in the public eye, especially when Roma rights as a movement is just beginning. (So few people have even heard about it.) She knows about the Roma and she chooses to perpetuate stereotypes. Nobody will think twice about she said or judge it. They'll simply absorb the cliche image of Gypsies she fed back into the media.

And that's where the work you are doing comes into play Alex. I think the relevance of academic research is directly proportional -or should effing be- to its dissemination and application in the communities where we take our data from. Otherwise, it becomes stagnant knowledge.

And I was serious sister, send me the draft.

I love love love Gogol Bordello, but I had to stop that video as soon as her singing started.

As far as "real" gypsies, Eugene is descendent from the Servo Roma tribe of gypsies. I'm not sure about Sergey, though. All I know for sure is that he's russian.

Also, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has become a joke. Madonna is far from Rock and Roll, as are most inductees.
