Since when does a minor child dictate to a parent? The boy needs some serious butt whipping by the mother. I would never bribe a child.

well, we are telling her what to do.. just giving some advice.. well, there's just two things that's going to happen : 1) he comes to the interview, 2) he doesn't.. doesn't mean he won't get approved if he doesn't come.. just making it harder for him and OP later on..

even you yourself said "Change is scary".. but life is all about changes.. we go to school to learn new things, we get married (some of us), we have kids, we grow old and learn from our mistakes.. either the OP will give in, or the kid.. I would rather not see the OP to give in.. he must learn that you always have to adapt to life.. not everyone has the finances to everything they want in life.. if you start giving them everything, they will never learn themselves the meaning of money.. just using that as an example.. Also, he cannot stay under his "mother's" wing his whole life.. Then he won't experience a lot of things by himself (including "american babes").. haha, but to be serious, just let him do what he wants.. if he wants to come (that's fine), if he doesn't (that's fine too).. It's his decision and he will live by it.. we don't always have the time to make the right decision (is there a right one?).. there might not be perhaps because there are advantages/disadvantages to both.. if he doesn't move, good thing is he doesn't leave his friends and doesn't change.. he can also learn to be independent (still too young I know, but later on I mean).. bad thing is he doesn't get to experience a new life (America) which probably would be different and maybe even more exciting..

maybe telling him that just becuz they have to go to the interview, doesn't mean his HAS TO move, just gives him that option and no one knows what the future holds. If they get the visas, he at least has the option to move.

Ok, I'll throw in my tuppence worth. (This is by no means judging your parenting skills, I have no idea about what techniques you have used, I'm just going with some common reasons for teens to act in this way)

Shouting at him and making him do it will only the the reverse action. I have worked with hundreds of kids about this age and never have I seen that technique work. I have seen this type of behavior lots of times.

At 16 he is feeling like he is a full grown up and should be treated as such. Sitting down as a family and listening to each other might help. He is probably scared about moving and leaving all his friends behind. He probably has some really good friends he doesn't want to leave. Another factor might be the lack of control. This can be scary for anyone at anytime. Moving is one of the most stressful things you can do, if you are just told "You are moving, suck it up" about 90% of people (adults as well) will fight this. Regardless of where or why, its an instinct, you want choice in the matter. Most of the time teens just want to be asked their opinions. They feel like nobody listens

My best advice is talk about how he is feeling, about his hopes and fears. Tell him you feelings, about what you want for the future. This can be pretty painful to do with a 16 year old boy, his immediate reaction will be to clam up and not talk, so it may involve you talking a lot first, but he will soon open up. Really listen to his input and see how much you can accommodate for him.

If that fails striking a deal is the second option (aka bribery but not as obvious as "Here, have a playstation and come with us")

Finally if all else fails he is still a minor in the eyes of the USCIS, which means he can pretty much say what he wants but I'm pretty sure it won't make a difference. Not 100% sure what will happen when he goes to the interview but I'm sure taht because he is still seen as a child they won't refuse his visa because of a tantrum.

As I said, I am in no way commenting on your parenting, you may have tried all this already. I some experience with this but everybody is different and its a case of finding what makes someone tick. Everyone reacts differently.

Good luck with the interview, I hope it all goes well

find the reason why he doesn't want to come ( has a girl friend?)..then try to go from there to convince him to come with you...i am sure that he will regret this option to go to the state in the future, and you also going to miss him. so my advise is to deal with him wisely.

good luck.

Hey folks, with all due respect - how about we answer the OP's question instead of judging her parenting practices?

She asked a specific question AND asked for advice. She has the answer and she's getting advice. Anybody reading the thread can see that. So, with all due respect, did you read the thread?

pushbrk,

Yes, I did read the thread and responded. What I did not do was go on a "WELL, HE DOESN'T GET A SAY" rant. I find it strange that you would respond to me in this way pushbrk, since you usually are quite elegant. I guess we all have our days.

Peace out, L.

I'm suggesting that if you have advice for the OP, offer it without slamming others for offering advice you wouldn't offer. Let the OP decide how to evaluate the opinions of others. In other words, make your responses about the topic instead of about other posters.

OMG.... Teenager Hormones Kicking In and our lives are in the balance....

The 16year old has gone into a typical teenager rebellion... I flew to Canada on Saturday, we are leaving tomorrow to drive to Montreal for our interview on Wednesday. The 16 year old says he is NOT going to the interview, that if he does he will tell them that he does not want to go to the states.

What do we do? Will we be denied if he is not there? Will we be denied if he makes that statement?

Lord knows WHY he's chosen now after all of this time......

Anyone have any answers or advice? HELPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just want to curl up in the fetal position and CRY!!!!!!!

Wish you good luck on your interview!
