Hmmm... what I'd like to know is who is knocking this "Pamela" up in the first place? Are we talking about different men or the same guy? Regardless of who is doing it, shouldn't this man or these men be held accountable in some fashion or another -- instead of the entire country, where the vast majority of people had absolutely nothing to do with it?

I'd also like to know (since I'm not from Argentina and have never been there, so I haven't researched their laws) what the legal age of consent is considered there as well. If she's had one child at 14, the first set of triplets at 15 and now a second set of triplets at 16, I'd have to think that all of that was done while underage.

And most importantly... where the hell did she even get the time to do all of this?! It seems that from ages 14 to 16, she's been popping out kids! Has she even had to time to breathe between pregnancies?

From Wikipedia:

In Argentina, the age at which there are no restrictions for sexual activities is 18, while the minimum age of consent is 13 regardless of gender and/or sexual orientation. Although sexual acts are generally legal with those 13 and over (Argentine Penal Code, Article 119 - in Spanish), the following restrictions apply in certain circumstances.

Restrictions apply for sex with adolescents between the ages of 13 and 16 (Argentine Penal Code, Article 120). Charges can only be brought after a complaint by the minor, their parent or guardian - (Argentine Penal Code Article 72) (however, the State prosecutes when the minor has no parent or legal guardian, or when the offender is one of them).

The restrictions mentioned above (for ages between 13 and 16) apply whenever someone over 18, taking advantage of the sexual immaturity of the minor or of his superiority (preeminencia) with respect to the minor, practices one of the following acts:

(Arg. Penal Code, Article 120 combined with Article 119, 1st and 3rd paragraphs).

There is also a further Argentine law, 'Corruption of minors', which can bring charges to those manipulating minors below the age of 18 into having sexual relations - (Argentine Penal Code Article 125 - in Spanish). Penalties are aggravated in three situations:

  • (a) if the minor is under 13;
  • (B) when sex is obtained by the means of deceit, violence, threat, abuse of authority or by any other means of intimidation or coercion, as well as when the offender is a parent or legal guardian, brother/sister, spouse, or someone who is a constant companion or who is responsible for educating or guarding the minor; or
  • © when the offender takes advantage of being a previous companion to the minor, in order to violate any of the restrictions aforementioned for ages between 13 and 16 (Argentine Penal Code - Article 119, 4th paragraph, section “f” - in Spanish)

never mind two sets of triplets....

My dearest friend,

We are on the same boat... I feel your pain. I really do. LOVE YOU.

To the both of you. (F)(L)

Has anyone considered the man impregnating her? What if he's an adult? She's still a child. Something's not right.

While I agree with you, take into consideration that this is in the middle of Remote-####### BFE, Argentina. I doubt if there's a drug store in her village, let alone a court, judge, or police.

Condoms are veeeery accesible in Argentina. By law, all pharmacies give them out for free and without restriction. several campaigns educate on the use of condoms, the most important ones being on spring day, when the streets are flooded with posters encouraging condom use and volunteers give them out for free. the second most important one being on "AIDS awareness day", in this day the obelisco wears a big bright condom. yes, a big bright condom. and again, volunteers hand out condoms in the streets.

You know how many fanatics protest against this "terrible evil"...0 ;)

This is not an issue of education, this girl (and/ or her mother) is obviously working the system, it was obvious when she gave birth to her first set of twins and is more obvious now. And it's obviously working for her if you read all the benefits she's been getting from the government. And I can tell you, people are not happy about this at all.

Saludos,

Caro

Just wanted to correct myself...

I researched Leones, Cordoba, Argentina, and while it's backwoods, it isn't as remote as the article implied. It's a proper village with train service and such.

But Caro, how much can a girl her age really be fully aware of what's she getting into? I just can't imagine any 14 yr. old girl (she had to have been that young when she first got pregnant) would be willingly getting herself pregnant in order to receive benefits. Even if she openly admitted, that was her intention, I couldn't see looking at her as an adult making decisions for herself. We consider anyone under 18 not an adult for good reasons.

I know, but the case sparked controversy on her last pregnancy because she had already received land and a house from the government, she was already getting more than the maximun amount on benefits, on top of that everyone in her community was helping out, yet she went to the media to ask for more. And I see them going down the same path now. I'm sorry, but the situation is shitty. The mother here should have done something after the first pregnancy, this is the 3rd time.

No offense, but have you been around many 14 year olds lately? It's more common than you would think, especially in places like Indianapolis. It's one way to "support yourself" when you have no home, no job, no future.

Anyway, she lives in an area that is primarily agricultural. Marriage and childbirth aren't *that* unusual for that age, I wouldn't think. Being unmarried and on "welfare", however, seems to be unusual.

I've been a teacher for the last 15+ years, and I've seen a lot...first experience of children having children was in my junior internship. One of my students (aged 15) was having her third child. Had her first at 12, second at 14, and would deliver the third at 16. Her mother took care of the children while she was at school, since the family would have lost all benefits if she was to quit school (which she made very plain to me). She was carrying a .7 grade point average (2.0 is minimum for graduation); and, after 2 years of high school she had earned .5 credits (out of a possible 12). Her three older sisters (the oldest being 21) already had 7 children between them; all were on public assistance (deduced since they all still lived at home)...

Was truly an eye-opener....

(F) to you and Len and Bren.

I read the article and all the posts here and I can't help but think the girl herself, or as her mother's pawn, is working the system.

Plenty of people have gotten pregnant (oops) at a young age and never once used public assistance. And most of us (yes, that's right...I said "us") learned a good lesson too :)

Also, the waiting list on adoptions is extremely long in Argentina, with many qualified parents praying their hearts out for a baby. Why is this not an option for her? on her situation, one would think she'd at least consider it.
