Just about the most selfish thing I've heard this week. Gag.

Unfortunately, that's the type of society we are turning into. So many people are only concerned with their own selves and are not the least bit concerned about their fellow citizens.

So why should someone else pay to feed you and keep you healthy? What did you do for them? This is your responsibility not everyone else's! If you can't figure out how to feed and keep yourself in good health then why should it be up to me?

The idea is that you're a member of a society (that dirty word again) and that you share a community with people who may need your help. Perhaps you benefited from taxpayer-funded services (ever had to call the cops? did you attend a public school? do you use the library or park? drive on highways?) at some point or will need to in the future. Plenty of people end up on government assistance temporarily who never would have imagined that scenario befalling them.

As much as conservatives want to deride the Big Bad Government, I don't see too many calling for privatization of the police force, or dismantling Medicare and forcing old people to pay for hospital visits.

I can't believe we're at the point where that needs to be explained.:help:

They've already messed that up pretty bad and Ron Paul would like to privatize social security so that those who are unable to even save up for a vacation every few years will be without a retirement fund when they are old.

Its been my experience that the more support infrastructure a country has, the happier people are.

I dunno - I think its a disgraceful situation that a person should lose everything simply because they get sick - because as it stands you can do everything right and still be sold down the river by the insurance industry. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. Healthcare is one thing that should work for the needs of patients rather than the demands of shareholders. However - the reality of it is - profit over quality of service in a captive market with the illusion of consumer choice.

We pay for your subsidized health care, would you prefer to go back to paying full premiums like everyone else?

Exactly! If health care is a so called "right". Then what about food, it is arguably more important than health care. So instead of letting people go hungry let's close all the restaurants and all the super markets and we give our money to the government then everyday they drop off the same food box to each and every American. We would all be equal, nobody would be obese, you would eat your ration each and every day just like everyone else.No diet related illness because you would not be allowed to eat any unhealthy foods. Beans, rice for all! Just think it would be Utopia!

Truth is health care is not a right and neither is food. The same way they would make you only eat beans and rice in a national food system, they will do the same with a national health care system.

Food is a right, just like health care. That's why we have food stamps and other programs. Obviously, we seem to have made this work without rationing everyone's food. Weird, huh?

If food and healthcare (two of the most basic needs that every person needs in order to survive) are not considered "rights" in your book then pray tell what is?

Can you look in the mirror and say you would rather have five dollars while several people die? That's what's at the heart of your opinion (along with a good dose of ignorance and mean-spiritedness about why people sometimes can't support their families). Just about the most selfish thing I've heard this week. Gag.

There is no more generous person to my friends and family than I. For over the past year I have fed and housed my cousin Sarah age 19, my cousin Bobby age 45, my cousins ex boyfriend Corbett age 50, my cousin Bobby's son Danny age 27 (who btw spent 2 tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and still has shrapnel in his knee from a morter shell), My disabled mother Ruth age 65 on top of that I support my darling Joy in the Philippines. On top of sending many hundreds of dollars of gifts to her and her family.

I do all the shopping, pay all the bills, I have been working 60+ hours a week at work for 3 years, while still talking to my Joy 4+ hours a night on yahoo messenger. On top of that my renters are over 2 months behind on their rent and I still have not kicked them into the street, while paying both mortgages out of my own pocket.

So yes, I do need that 5 dollars. This is the job of the people that love them not the job of government. That is what strong family values are for! It is up to the individual to be responsible for themselves. If they cannot then it is the job of their family. Then it falls to charities and the churches, that is what a strong spititual base comes in. They are 1000% more efficient at it. Never, ever the government! Not their job!
