I always laugh when I hear that whole spiel about the evils of social programs... Then I look at my paycheck, see that my total payroll deductions are proportionally the same, if slightly more than they were in the UK. Then I stop laughing... because its really not funny is it...

I'm paying the same or more... for what exactly...?

The problem with your statement is that you are making comparisons. Look at the amount deducted and make no comparisons, its to dam much percentage wise. What is it now, we work till june to pay our taxes?

Of course I'm making comparisons... Why is that a problem?

It certainly isnt a problem, but depending on the comparison you can make something look better or worse than it really is.

Well... it is worse if I'm paying proportionally more than I used to, and receiving less into the bargain.

Makes me wonder what folks are so afraid of when they talk about "socialist countries".

I am exactly the same - as a percentage, I pay as much as I did in the UK. This only includes what is deducted from my paycheck and does not factor in about $2000 in co-pays over the past year

It's the word 'socialist'. If a 'true' American sees that word he just sees reds under the bed...a lot of political growth is required. Still, we can't expect anything different after all, how old is this democracy now?

The presidential election is the biggest farce. Talk about "America's Funniest Video's" The lamest one always wins.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

There's a bit in Sicko, Michael Moore's latest movie where they skim over the "socialism" thing via a montage of old Soviet propaganda movies. Not that far off really ;)
