Ok, maybe a stupid question, but I don't know anything about diamonds. If it was a *monopoly* then doesn't that mean that all diamonds were De Beers?

I saw a documentary on this once. It's kind of like the diamond industry version of OPEC. The countries and companies in those organizations agree to limit the amount of gem-quality diamonds released to the market in order to maintain high economic return. Otherwise diamonds would be a dime a dozen.

Somehow I thought Canada was outside all that. I guess they have humane diamond mining practices there, but you're still giving money to DeBeers after all. This saddens me, but only for about five seconds.

I'm not quite sure what you're referring to but each country has its own regulations regarding any industry within their borders. Organizations who do not follow said regulations are penalized and/or shut down. Canada is not known for inhumane practices.

Thanks for posting this Steven. My husband will be very happy to read about this.

He is very much against buying diamonds because of the cartel. That's why I was so surprised and very honored that he set that aside to get me a nice diamond engagement ring.

Guess now I'll have to ask our jeweler if the diamond we got is from De Beers.

I'm referring to, for example, most African diamond mining, which is famous for inhumane practices. Supporting a company that is humane in Canada, while mining my diamond, but then abuses Africans simultaneously, is not appealing to me.

(Neither is poutine.)

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).
