a little help please

i know this isnt the site for this but i honestly cant find the right answer has anyone here had any problems with there taxes before i owe money as the company i just worked for it pretty dodgy never put me on payroll now the tax thing they gave me is self employed even though i wasn't so im paying that tax also i can pay the amount by april 18th or even within the month just not right this instant what do i do i dont want to go to jail or mess up my green card

You are being paid as an independent contractor. They gave you a 1099-MISC wage statement (for contractors) instead of a W-2 (for employees). As a contractor, they did not hold out of your check federal taxes, Social Security and Medicare. That's not dodgy; it's what they are supposed to do when they have contractors.

 

Did you not know tax things were typically held out of paychecks? Wasn't tax and NHS contributions held out of your UK paychecks? Were you paid in cash or by check? 

 

You won't go to jail or mess up your green card.

It might be dodgy if she's in fact an employee (employer was deciding on schedule, providing work tools - there's a worksheet to determine her status) -

i was just an normal restaurant employee i was never put on the payroll why i got that form i asked to pay taxes but my boss kept saying i would be fine i dont feel fine uhh what will happen i cant pay the taxes by the 17th and my husband said we cant afford to do the extension form because all the interest we will incur i dont know what to do

Call the IRS for advice or find a VITA center

Employers cannot choose to treat you as employee or independent contractor.

It is substance over form.

Talk to them and tell them. And warn them that you will report them to the DOL (they constantly audit and assess penalties, on top of unpaid payroll taxes).
