Hello everyone,

i just received my immigration visa (spouse based, don't know the type of visa lol)  so now I'm planning on traveling soon. I have a question, can I apply for greencard before traveling to the US, and if I can, is it okay for me to travel near the time to collection of plastic card, instead of waiting there in US? Or the processing of greencard starts AFTER I land in the US ?

You should/can pay the ELIS fee before you travel. The GC will not be processed before it is paid. However, upon entry, your visa will be endorsed (stamped) and serves as a temporary GC for one year. That means you are free to travel in/out of the US while waiting for your physical GC.

If it isn't difficult, it isn't worth it.

 

K1 process

9/24/15: I129f sent

9/30/15: NOA1

11/2/15: NOA2

Delayed processing due to work

3/15/16: Medical

4/28/16: Interview (approved)

Delayed entry due to work

8/12/16: POE Detroit

 

9/4/16: Wedding!

 

AOS process:

9/9/16: I485/I131/I765 sent

9/14/16: Received 3xNOAs by text/e-mail (day 2)

9/14-18/16: Received 3xpaper NOAs 

9/23/16: Received biometrics appointment letter (day 11)

10/3/16: Biometrics appointment (day 19)

11/4/16: EAD+AP approved (day 53)

11/16/16: EAD status changed to card shipped (day 65)

11/17/16: EAD/AP combo card received (day 66)

12/30/16: Notice of interview scheduled (day 109)

2/1/17: AOS interview (day 142) - APPROVED

2/8/17: GC received (day 150)

 

ROC process:

11/3/2018: ROC window opens

Thankyou so much for the response A'n'L.

I will definitely pay the immigration fee and GC fee before entering the US. But my question remains, the processing of plastic GC starts as soon as I pay? Or it starts AFTER I land? 

In other words I plan to go to US for only collection of my GC in this trip.. For that I can go there after a couple of months (I know it's up to 120 days mostly) only for 15 days to collect the card? Or I'll have to stay there for the waiting period of plastic GC?

When the card will arrive is very difficult to predict, but you do not need the card to travel for the fist year.

Me: Irish/ Swiss citizen, and now naturalised US citizen. Husband: USC; twin babies born Feb 08 in Ireland and a daughter in Feb 2010 in Arkansas who are all joint Irish/ USC. Did DCF (IR1) in 6 weeks via the Dublin, Ireland embassy and now living in Arkansas.

It starts after the fee is paid AND you have entered the US (activated your immigration visa). It can take anywhere from weeks to several months to get the physical GC though (it's unpredictable). As said, you don't need it to travel for the first year. Keep in mind though, to keep your resident status you should not stay outside the US for extensive periods of time.

If it isn't difficult, it isn't worth it.

There's only one fee, the USCIS Immigrant fee that can be paid any time now. You are not a permanent resident until you enter the US. 

Pay the $220 fee >> enter the US  >> Green card production is activated. In that order. Can take 2-6 mos for the card.
