Ring finger?

Curiosity got the best of me after a response in another topic. This is for IR/CR-1 visa applicants not K-1's.

When you got married in the Philippines, did you place wedding rings on the left or right hands?

This issue created a very slight delay at our wedding. I reached for her left hand while she already had her right extended. So we are now both wearing our wedding band on the right hand and she is wearing her engagement ring on the her left hand.

Is this the norm? 50/50? Or is my wife just 'different'?

Left hand by tradition. But hey, there's no rules in regard to that. Do what's comfortable for both of you.

Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart

and lean not on your own understanding;

in all your ways submit to Him,
and He will make your paths straight.

In GOD we trust. † = ♥

In some cultures they wear them on the left hand, in others on the right hand, and then there's also personal preference to take into account as well. Even though the right hand is customary in Serbia, where I'm from, I wear mine on the left just because it's a lot less in the way that way (since I'm right-handed).

P.S. The right hand wins out in most of Europe as far as I know (the right hand for the wedding band is customary in most of central, southern and eastern Europe) and one of the origin stories that I've read somewhere (that actually makes some sense) is that the left hand was considered the "untrustworthy" hand during Roman times (the English word sinister comes from Latin where it primarily means left, but also bad, perverse, hostile...) so the right hand was preferred.

To be honest, you don't even have to wear a wedding ring at all, although I know people get nervous about that. In the UK we wear ours on the left hand and I know it's pretty standard for the US as well. Most other European countries seem to wear theirs on the left too, but I can't vouch for all of them!

Do what feels right for the both of you.

there is no rule yes, but wedding rings are worn on the left because there's a vein in our left ring finger that connects to the heart- ancient story i have read somewhere. So this is more of a tradition than any rules.

But hey, being married is not not about rings :)

Many countries in which the Eastern Orthodox version of Christianity is predominant opt for the right hand. I am sure that there are a variety of other cultural and religious factors which influence this choice as well.

Olga and I discussed this briefly. I advised her to choose the hand which made her feel the most comfortable. She opted for the left hand as part of assimilation into the US culture.

This is really a matter of personal preference.

Good luck.

Not for K-1? What?? Filipinas married through a K-1 don't have a clue on Philippine traditions regarding rings?

Anyway, my wife said the opposite of what your wife said; engagement ring on the right hand, wedding rings on the left, I am guessing traditional in the Philippines depends on "where" ;) . And that is how it was done during our wedding in the Philippines too; yup we did the vale, chain, coins ... full meal deal wedding.

It's funny you mention that. The pastor during our wedding ceremony talked about how there is a vein going from your ring finger to your heart. He didn't say anything about it specifically being the left ring finger though. We put the rings on our left fingers at the ceremony though. I am however wondering what you should do with the engagement ring. We wear ours on our right ring finger.

There are veins and arteries from all parts of the body and they all lead to the heart....

Very true. I just thought that was interesting that the other poster mentioned that and the pastor talked about it as part of our wedding ceremony.

I was married twice in the Philippines, Once civilly then in the Catholic church more recently for con-validation

Both times the rings were placed on the left Hand without any hesitation or intent to use the right hands. Never heard of this option before.

This quote maybe sums it up: Wedding rings are traditionally worn on the ring finger of the right hand in Germany, Austria, Poland, Bulgaria, Norway and Russia. However, in most other countries such as Mediterranean countries, the USA and Switzerland, wedding rings are worn on the left hand. But why? A question it is almost impossible to answer.
