Hi I have my oath in less than a month. I got so much information off of different post and think it should be combined at a place to ppls anxioty sake.

Quick question since I just became a usc got married in 2010 can my step son that 10 years old become a citizen automatically if yes how do I go about this and thanks again

Not yet, you have to be a citizen and living in the US for a certain number of years. Not sure if you can even do that for step-children but someone else might have a better idea.

My status just changed yesterday, it went from "in line for scheduling an interview" to "is now scheduled for interview."

Your N400, APPLICATION FOR NATURALIZATION is now scheduled for interview. You will receive a written notice with a time and place for your interview. You should receive this notice within 14 days.

I checked my status today on USCIS website and it says I got scheduled for interview and will get a letter within 14 days. I guess I'm the last one.
For the interview do I just read the book and go through the CD they gave during fingerprinting or do I have to prepare anything else?

I have to go and check those details as well to prepare, but I think you have to know the names of your state's Governor, your Senator, Congressman etc (along with the names of President and Vice President of the USA, you must have got the book recently so the names of Pres and VP should be the same in that book as they are today).

Did you have to do a name change because you want a name that's different from the one on your Green card? Or did you have to do it because they wanted to go by the name on the birth certificate? My name on the birth certificate is not the same as I have used since I grew up (the first name, last name doesn't work with most Asian names) but the name I used since high school is the same as on my Green card and that is the name I want to continue to use.

Any ideas if I have to go for an official "name change" procedure or not?

(Please double-check what I say here, I might be wrong)

I know that biological children and adopted children under 18 can get citizenship once the parent (any parent) becomes a citizen but the parent has to file N-600 application for certificate of citizenship. With N-600 there is a $600 fee (no fingerprint, no FP fee), there is no interview (if I recall correctly), no test etc. When my father filed N-600 for my sister she was a few months under 18 and we were concerned what will happen if she turns 18 before the completion of the process but she got her citizenship before turning 18. Now that I have read your post that says "Automatic citizenship", I googled up and found that apparently the child becomes a citizen automatically but the N-600 is just an application to get the citizenship certificate, and probably the N-600 can be sent even after the child becomes 18, because the idea is that the child becomes a citizens automatically as soon as the required conditions are satisfied, not after N-600 is filed.

I just read the instructions for N-600, it clearly mentions that this form is for biological children and for adopted children but not for stepchildren.

I googled and found an immigration advice page (it's not official US govt page, so no guarantee if it's 100% right and 100% up to date), it doesn't allow copying any text so you can read it here, it seems like you if "finally and fully adopt your child" (it mentions a "final adoption decree", whatever that means) before the age of 16 and the child lives with you for at least two years, then the child is eligible for automatic citizenship (and then you use N-600 for citizenship certificate).

If the requirements of the N-600 (adoption before 16 and living with step-parent for 2 years) are not fulfilled and the child does have a green card, he or she can just go through the 5 year residency and then apply for N-400.

That's not crazy, that's what sounds like a name change

My name on birth certificate had "Muhammad" as the first name (common for Muslim families around the world but it's like a pre-first-name rather than firt name). I used my first name (not Muhammad) + father's name as the first+last name when I grew up and that's the name on the GC but not on the Birth certificate. Likewise many Christian Pakistanis use the last name as "Maseeh" which means "Messiah" (i.e. the title of the Prophet Jesus Christ).

Based on the Euro-American strict categorization of first and last names, my BC has my actual first name as my last name. Much of the world uses post-names and pre-names, and uses first name as the first name and father's name as the last name (i.e. the grandfather, great grandfather etc don't all have the same last name, everyone's last name is the name of his/her father). The American-style last name system makes it easier to link the whole family together but it's a headache for those who don't have that kind of first + last name system

Now I don't know if I need an official name change; I want to keep the name that's there on the GC. If they say the name on the BC will be considered the true official one, then they should have kept it the same on the GC (or should have told me to get an official name change done when I got my GC).
