She turns 18 in January 26. And yes the council tax is ridiculous and I am not going to be a poor widow if tragedy strucks. Luckily we are both healthy and not planning to age ever! But I hear you.

you could also get medical & financial powers of attorney for each other
little less extensive than a will but still good

Ah, didn't realise she was 18. Probably not so vital then, but still I'd say a will is important, particularly if you want your kids to get your estate (or at least some of it).

I hear you on the politics, taxes and medical insurance. I'm in Massachusetts where property taxes would be comical if people didn't actually have to pay them. I saw a house on Realtor.com the other day, it was a really nice house on 10 acres, but even so it was $90k a year in property taxes. Just a tiny bit higher than our council tax in the UK. 😂

That would be exactly why I'd make a will as a parent. I may not want the person the law says would get guardianship of my child to have that. Awful thought but if you died tomorrow, would your child want to return to her home country and relatives there, or stay in the US with your husband? These are vital things to think about and why a will is a good idea.

Why are you not on other insurances? You should be, particularly his life insurance (and vice versa).

Medical insurance is a big help, as that's not something roommates would be on.

You need to get a will sorted anyway (particularly if you have a daughter), regardless of immigration, so that might be a good one to get done and again will show that it's a legit marriage.

What about joint insurances? Car/life/even pet or similar?

None of that is helpful. You need to think of things that show you live in the same property but differentiate you from being housemates. Being on his medical insurance as his dependent is a great one. Ditto life insurance. Share your wills. Etc.

    Good luck.

You have what you have. Financial evidence is nice to have, it makes it easier, but it's not a deal breaker if you don't. You can expect some questions on why things are the way they are and then you give them the reason. They'll know if they are dealing with a real couple or not.

One thing I noticed during our interview (ROC) was that the officer did not really direct questions to either one of us. She just kind off threw it out there and one of us would answer. (And on some answers the other would then give more info). Looking back I think that the officer did that on purpose to see what kind of respond we would give.

As for what else you can bring:
    - cell phone bills
    - mail in either or both names
    - The permission slip that the step parent signed
    - Emergency contact lists from school
    - 401K beneficiary docs.
    - Will and estate documents.
    - The receipt from the agent doing security clearance interviews on your neighbors. (Not common, I had 2 of those but never had to use them).
    - The HOA pool membership.
Basically anything that can tie both of you to the same address.

Non of these examples here are "strong" on their own, but combined they tell a story.

Google it or ask ChatGPT to make you a template of affidavit of bonafide marriage for USCIS. Then you can customize it from neighbor's perspective and ask them to sign it. Ideally you want to notarize or include copy of person's ID to proof authenticity.

just a next door neighbor, doesnt need to be family, to state they actively see you living in the house/being there full time

Oh man, this doesn't look good. Photos is the weakest evidence.

    You need to get creative.

Did you take trips together? E.g flights and hotel reservations listing both names.

Amazon household, shared wireless family plans, Costco membership or museum memberships.

Affidavits from people who know you well (neighbors, friends, family etc)

You may need to explain why you don't have those. What all evidence do you have?

we just had our interview a few days ago - here's our experience
might depend on the officer, but i stayed with my husband the whole time.
are you on a lease or a mortgage? those are really good cause it helps show you live in the same place.

Update: USCIS has just taken action and our interview is scheduled for 23 September. I wonder if anyone would like to share what their interview was like? So many documents to bring, LOL.  And we do not have joint bank account, or joint bills. He has only electricity bill, really..... does the spouse remain in the room during the interview? I wonder if they ask questions to the teen children too..you know, the ones that reply with 'I don't know' and 'mmm?' To every question.

Ours showed the same thing after the biometrics appointment… then 7 months later we got a notice to appear for an interview. They then “unchecked” that step until we had the interview. Every marriage based adjustment of status now is required to have an interview. They no longer waive this requirement. This is right from the mouth of the USCIS officer that did our interview.

This is state specific. Some states require local licenses after x days in the state. Hopefully they gave an answer after research, not just blanket statement.

It is painful, but tax returns can be amended in the future to get money back.

My USCIS account also skipped over the interview, but the reality is that you will likely be interviewed, especially with them stating all marriage based applicants, both pending and new, will have an interview.

You should have recieved I797s in the mail, or can access the digital copies on your USCIS account under the Documents tab of your I485 application. An EAD would show status, without it you're current here on an expired visa, but not illegal, and they can't categorize you as anything to allow the issuance of ID.

Driving on a foreign license is generally only allowed for the first 90 days of stay, but this varies by state.

I recently got my learners permit, and for that I took all I797s from first filing to EAD approval, including biometrics letter, my EAD card, my passport with K1 visa inside, current I94, my SSN, marriage certificate.

Yes, you're reading status right. It shows interview wasn't required. But I wouldn't trust this 100%

    Status doesn't mean anything.
My I-751 was estimated 7 months, took 20.5.

N-400 was estimated 7 months again, took 3.5 months. On day of my oath, status showed 3 weeks until decision. What decision, I'm still unsure 😃

You will likely have an interview before approval decision can be made.

So, your I-485 was approved?  Your timeline indicates otherwise.

I would have applied for EAD. It is proof of status, which is what DMV and SSA want to see to issue driver's license and SSN.
