It sounds like it says it's on private property but not on the area of curtilage.

Yeah imagine you have a home on 40 acres with a decent length drive. In theory they can watch most of the drive and most of the land just not the immediate half acre around the structure. If you have a deer fence surrounding your home for instance, that should be the limit and no cameras should be able to observe the house itself.

Of course if you have a deer fence on the edge of the 40 acres I would have to assume they would probably need to cut into it to get through and that still must be against the law.

  2. no, they're not. they are meant (designed) to fire a bullet. what one chooses to fire that bullet at is the issue.

were the above in bold true, i'm guilty of misusing many of my firearms - by shooting paper targets. unless paper targets have feelings.

In a lot of arguments (normally related to cars) the whole designed to kill statement is always mentioned. I don't disagree with the statement in that initially firearms were designed to kill, but as you've stated in modern times they have many uses.

there are quite a few technologies that started out with the mission to kill, yet they go beyond that in our society today.

On the OP, I have no problem with research in to safer firearms. Thus far there have been two proposals for "safer" firearms - biometric control and case stamping.

  3. On the original subject, the greatness of GW was his rejection of power something Chavez could only do in death. Of course I agree that Washington was no great tactician as a general, though Penn clearly has a black and white view of Benedict Arnold. The man did great things for this country only to be ignored and passed over. If you look at the history of why he became a traitor you should find a certain level of sympathy for him.

  4. In my school, believe it or not, dodgeball was called "War Ball". https://www.santarosa.k12.fl.us/sms/Faculty/Melton/Handouts/warball.htm

We would play with 4 balls though instead of two and headshots were allowed since we were using yellow balls with heavy foam interiors instead of the red rubber ones.

I think one of the major rule diferences was that when we played there was a no mans land area in the center instead of a dividing line - ie you could't cross the free throw line on the other teams side (using a basketball court). So there were opportunities to get behind people and hit them in the back.

  5. In the latest incident of anti-gun hysteria to erupt in a school setting, officials at an elementary school in small-town Michigan impounded a third-grader boy’s batch of 30 homemade birthday cupcakes because they were adorned with green plastic figurines representing World War Two soldiers.

The school principal branded the military-themed cupcakes “insensitive” in light of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, reports Fox News Radio.

“It disgusted me,” Casey Fountain, the boy’s father, told Fox News. “It’s vile they lump true American heroes with psychopathic killers.”

Fountain explained that his wife had made the cupcakes. His son, Hunter, helped decorate them. The following morning, Fountain’s wife brought the taboo treats to the school’s front office, where the secretary reportedly remarked favorably on their appearance.

“About 15 minutes later the school called my wife and told her they couldn’t serve the cupcakes because the soldiers had guns,” Fountain told Fox News. “My wife told them to remove the soldiers and serve the cupcakes anyway — and I believe she may have used more colorful language.”

“We’re just taking political correctness too far,” the angry father added.

In a statement to local media, Schall Elementary School principal Susan Wright Susan Wright doubled down on her school’s bold stand against little green men that represent American soldiers.

“These are toys that were commonplace in the past,” Wright said. “However, some parents prohibit all guns as toys. In light of that difference, the school offered to replace the soldiers with another item and the soldiers were returned home with the student.”

“Living in a democratic society entails respect for opposing opinions,” the principal also said. “In the climate of recent events in schools we walk a delicate balance in teaching non-violence in our buildings and trying to ensure a safe, peaceful atmosphere.”

This incident is the latest in a growing line of apparent overreactions by school officials to things students have brought to school — or talked about bringing to school, or eaten at school — that are not anything like real guns.

I posted this because I find the Principals words and actions hypocritical. She says “Living in a democratic society entails respect for opposing opinions" and yet showed intolerance and a lack of respect for the boy and his parent's views. In all likelihood no one objected and she simply applied her own inner prejudice to the situation showing that in her school there is apparently NO respect for opposing opinions.

  6. Adoption is an expensive, lengthy process. This probably seemed like the better option.

I think they paid her quite a bit. Private adoptions range from 10k - 30k so I think based on her fee it would have been in their price range. If you go through the foster system its much cheaper.

The Telegraph's version has this "The couples' three children had all been born prematurely and two had ongoing medical problems." Something tells me they had no business having another child to begin with.

This certainly reflects the prejudice gun owners see. I was reading an interesting study on firearm use in the home and mock trials. The trials centered around home attacks and the victim shooting the attacker.

What they found was that women who were proficient shooters were more likely to be harshly treated. The theory is that they are outside typical gender roles and therefore receive less favor.

Likewise with scenarios being equal the victim received more or less favor based on how scary the firearm used was. The mini 14 was used in the study along side an AR 15. An Ar 15 user was treated more harshly than a mini 14 user despite the fact that both firearms are similar with the exception of aesthetics.

  8. From what I've read, the new law exposes the company to possible litigation under new regulations. Whilst the bill provided a general exemption for them, there was still concern that such a hole still exists regarding firearms being shipped for repair etc.

I myself have had to ship a cylinder to Beretta last year which had an over tighten part. They were very helpful and drilled the part out, giving me a few spares too.

  9. We still don't actively teach what rape is, though, which is a problem. Many rapists don't understand when they are raping a women. Guys have sex with girls who are too drunk to fight off, which is a form of rape. Guys coerce girls and take "no" as "try harder" rather than as a refusal. If girls are dressed provocatively in any way then they are "asking for it" because men are incapable of controlling their hormones. Boyfriends and husbands feel entitled to have sex with their girlfriend/wife even is she doesn't want to, which is a form a rape too.

People argue that these are all "grey areas", which is the problem with rape culture. There are no grey areas. If a girl does not want to have sex and you have sex with her, it is a rape. If she is physically incapable of saying no, it is a rape. Same goes for guys who are raped.

This is what we need to actively teach along with proper precautions.

In the context of this thread, however, we are discussing out in public where a person is being physically assaulted. I think we as a society have this down.

In the home, or under the influence defense tactics become limited.
